Move to Mybb?

Postby shamzblueworld » 22 Sep 2013, 02:22

I'd like to as for opinions on this, I've created a forum with phpbb few days ago, it has over 100 posts now. And a couple of active members as well.
Now I wanted to add few features and tried the mods, but they all didnt work the way I wanted them too, did all the editing of files etc, as you know how hard it is to install mods on phpbb, and even after the hardwork, it didnt work out well for me, so I'm thinking of moving to mybb now, what you think? Suggestions?

I always say that people should go with whatever they feel comfortable. If you prefer MyBB then go for it. You as the owner and admin will spend alot more time using the forum then your users so you need something that you can manage and that you like.

As for installing mods on phpBB, it can be hard to start off with but it does get easier. Not as easy as a 1 click install but I wouldn't call it hard. I would just call it tedious. That said, I personally would prefer to use phpBB3 for forums over other software as phpBB3 is what I am most comfortable using. Alot of people rant on about how crap phpBB3 is and how great Xenforo is and so on but I just always feel alot more comfortable with phpBB as I have been using it for god knows how many years and know how almost everything works.

Set up a test MyBB forum and have a play around and see if you like it. Don't rush into a conversion.

That would be great, I installed the Full Quick reply and Jquery Quick Edit plugin that didnt work at all.
Also few plugins that I want to install, I just didnt because it was too lengthy, too many files to edit. I don't remember atm which mod it was, but there was one which had installation time of 95 minutes written in its doc, now thats just too much isn't it?

And yes Fowler you are right, you are comfortable with phpbb3 because you are using it for such long, but for a person who has used phpbb3 and mybb for equal span of time, or has not used any of them before, would go with mybb between the two.
But I must say, I like themes of phpbb3 better than mybb.

As Fowler said, you should use what you are more comfortable with. MyBB does have a lack of good themes (it has some, but not many) which I can admit, but I still prefer it to phpBB, as I've used it longer. You could always purchase a premium theme which usually go for anywhere between $15 and $25 and customize it to your needs. Premium MyBB are some of the best designed themes around.

Don't get me wrong, phpBB is great, but we can understand why you might feel the need to switch. phpBB mod installations (as Fowler said) can be tedious and time consuming, but when done correctly, can improve the features of your board tremendously.

I am offering forum services and would be happy to migrate your forum from phpBB to MyBB, for a small amount of Forum Coin.

I have moved to MyBB, here it is http://awebmastr.com and you are right, it does lack good themes. Can you make themes for FC as well?

At the current moment, I do not create themes. I will customize a theme to your specification however. Have a look at my services thread.

Personally, I would switch to MyBB as it is easier to install plugins but stick with what you feel comfortable with as others stated. If you are looking for easy installation and lots of features, go with MyBB but phpBB is just as good, just harder.

More than user friendly, I'd say it is admin friendly.

I would stick with phpBB. A lot of people at the myBB Community Forums are saying that MyBB is way too far behind in development compared to phpBB and other softwares.

I upgraded to the latest release today, it had a big bug, found the solution in the community forums, but since its been more than two weeks of the release, they should have fixed it in the main release pack.

I would really suggest that you try to stick to your original solution. phpBB does have many major benefits over MyBB. Since there are many MyBB forums out there nowadays, you might gain a unique audience by hanging on to phpBB. Just continue customizing and working on it. :)

The security side of MyBB isn't impressing me much these days.
