All about Phishing

Postby cleotobias14 » 01 Jul 2015, 11:53

Phishing is the attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money), often for malicious reasons, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

You really can be amazed at how many people actually still fall for these things, it is very easy for other people to get your info through phishing. That's why you always have to be careful when surfing the web/

I worked tech support at my old job at a call center for Canadian internet, phone, cable company. I had people call in often stating they got emails from (companies name) wanting to update their password, they would click it then their account would have incorrect password. We could fix it from our end but then we had to educate them to watch out for Phishing emails and what that means. The easiest step I use is going by where the phising email came from, like it it makes sense mainly. And knowing if a company actually emails you during those times helps too in that type of situation at least.

I get these emails from time to time trying to get me to enter in my paypal or bank info. I know enough not to touch them but I worry about my mother because she's older and not used to the internet. I've installed antivirus software and have instructed her not to put her personal info anywhere unless she sends me a link and okay it first, but still I worry. Scams like this prey upon the old and it makes me sad when honest people fall for phishing.

I recently did a job for the college on Phishing and there is plenty to talk about it. But currently our browsers and antivirus are prepared for most of these attacks (not completely). Do not be tempted to do something you do not think is reliable.

I can only recommend to check source of the mails and the websites. When you get email from "stupid.idiot@gmail.com" with paypal template saying something like: Your PP acc got limited, I will not care about the whole email nust only because the fake email I know that is fake.

What are usually the sites that they use to make phishing? We could create a list of potential phishing scams and people would become more aware about them!

Yes phishing stuffs are all over the internet and if you're not vigilant enough to differentiate it with the original sites or pages, most probably you're one of the easiest victim of it. I'm pretty bothered most especially to those who fall in sites who promises gifts and freebies in exhange of your personal data.

formerly it was easier to fall into phishing scams, for not a lot of information circulating and the internet was kind of novelty, nowadays many uninformed people just fall in this type of scam, which is usually by e-mail

I am very careful with providing my bank or credit card details online. I guess I never have to worry but what would the malicious person do with my facebook account in case he was able to trick me?
