It can be very useful if there is a mod which can do this.

MyBB has this in a plugin called NewPoints. It's a points system essentially and you can configure it so the user receives points on new replies, threads or points per character. This gives the user points for every character in a post.

Personally I think it is easier for users to understand if they get a fixed amount per post. When you start dealing with different fixed amounts per forum with additional points for the characters users (which also may differ from forum to forum), it can be quite confusing.shamzblueworld wrote:...Don't you think its a good idea to implement it then?

XenForo can also do this with the Credits addon. Also has a lot of nice features you can also add to it as well.

shamzblueworld wrote:Yes, you are right too Dennis, but still if someone writes a 5000 character long post, he should be rewarded more, unless it is a copy paste.
The biggest downside to giving users Forum Currency for every character they use in their posts is that users will be tempted to try and fill their posts with pointless words, quotes, examples and so on just to try and increase the number of characters as much as they can.
Fowler wrote:Also you don't want to encourage people to write a small amount of content into a large post just to increase the number of characters.
I could say the above in alot more characters but it will just waste time of people reading it. I could have worded it:The biggest downside to giving users Forum Currency for every character they use in their posts is that users will be tempted to try and fill their posts with pointless words, quotes, examples and so on just to try and increase the number of characters as much as they can.
That is twice as long as the first part of my post while saying basically the same with a bit of unneeded information in. Length is not always the best measurement to judge quality. Having some sort of "Is this post helpful?" rating and giving forum currency for every "yes" they get may work better but even that is open to abuse.
