Is this possible?

Postby shamzblueworld » 06 Oct 2013, 12:39

Is this possible to have forum currency setup with post lenght? Like if someone posts a larger post/topic gets more points then say a few words reply? Can it be attached in such a way with character lenght of the posts?
It can be very useful if there is a mod which can do this.

I am sure it depends on the software used but the mod we use for phpBB offers this functionality on a per character basis.

MyBB has this in a plugin called NewPoints. It's a points system essentially and you can configure it so the user receives points on new replies, threads or points per character. This gives the user points for every character in a post.

Don't you think its a good idea to implement it then?

Ate the moment we award Forum Coin on a per post and per topic basis. We may add additional Forum Coin per character in the future, but not just at the moment.

Yes it can be a good option in a content oriented section, like aritcles or tutorials maybe, the more content a post has, higher is its worth.

Personally I think it is easier for users to understand if they get a fixed amount per post. When you start dealing with different fixed amounts per forum with additional points for the characters users (which also may differ from forum to forum), it can be quite confusing.

As others mentioned before me there are ways. They mentioned for mybb and phpbb.

XenForo can also do this with the Credits addon. Also has a lot of nice features you can also add to it as well.

Yes, XenForo is feature rich, that I admit.

And I think it should be based on quality not quantity, a 500 character post could be more helpful than one with 5000.

Yes, you are right too Dennis, but still if someone writes a 5000 character long post, he should be rewarded more, unless it is a copy paste.

Which forum software are we talking about? In my opinion, phpBB has the best currency systems. MyBB has its own, but it isn't always as secure or reliable as phpBB's system. I haven't tried out Xenforo's system.

I would like a feature where the OP can "Thank" a poster, which would provide the poster more points. That's certainly a good way to award quality.

It could take more effort / time, to write a shorter more informative post than it would to write thousands of characters that go on and on yet don't explain it as good. A system where a thread is rated by other members (out of 5 stars) and then A reward is given based on the overall rating may work better as quality would be valued more.

Also you don't want to encourage people to write a small amount of content into a large post just to increase the number of characters.

I could say the above in alot more characters but it will just waste time of people reading it. I could have worded it:

The biggest downside to giving users Forum Currency for every character they use in their posts is that users will be tempted to try and fill their posts with pointless words, quotes, examples and so on just to try and increase the number of characters as much as they can.

That is twice as long as the first part of my post while saying basically the same with a bit of unneeded information in. Length is not always the best measurement to judge quality. Having some sort of "Is this post helpful?" rating and giving forum currency for every "yes" they get may work better but even that is open to abuse.

If it only rewards after a certain number of ratings that could prevent abuse.

I agree with Fowler. :) It's a lot less confusion if each post earns a certain amount of money.

I remember that I used to have a rewards thread on my old forum. If you made a post that solved someone's question, you could "claim points" by PMing me or replying on the thread. It worked out well. And there was no confusion.

That will be cool but not now.A forum needs time to grow and have quite a number of post before trying other things online.

I think it is a tricky thing to deal with. I have seen forum posting jobs that require a minimum number of words and people would just add letters or spaces just to get more 'characters' in the reply. Probably the better thing is to just issue a warning to forum posters that doesn't comply regularly to the regulation. Like if the replies are more spam-like rather than to encourage further discussion in the thread.

I think it would be confusose had a rule stating that could not exist posts with at least x, but it had a lock with the 20 letters eg minimum would be easier to understand
