Quiting a forum and switching to Blogging

Postby shamzblueworld » 04 Nov 2013, 10:22

Well I'd like to hear some advice on this one, I have this webmaster forum(link is in my signature) that I have kind of lost interest in, I'm having an idea of quiting it and starting a webmaster blog on the domain, what you guys think? All suggestions are welcome.

If you have lost interest in the site, it is probably best to stop spending time on it. Removing the forum and starting a blog is certainly an option, other options you could consider include;

- Selling the existing forum and starting a blog from scratch on a different domain. aWebmastr.com is a good domain and it does look well, so it may prove attractive to a potential buyer.
- Starting a blog on the existing domain and maintaining both a forum and the blog on the same domain. Some websites, e.g. SitePoint have been very successful with this approach.

Good luck with it and please do let us know what you decide to do.

Yes the second option was in my mind when I bought this domain, as you said its a decent domain name so I thought of having a blog on it and a forum in the sub domain too. I don't think I'm going to sell this one right now. So I might go with that second option.
Thank you for your suggestions Fergal.

I have done both, a blog and a forum, and I believe it gets too complicated to handle both with equal activity. When running a blog, guests want to see content, when running a forum, guests also want to see content and activity. If you think you could do double the work than running a forum, then go ahead and do both. But I think blogging is really great, I've done blogging before and absolutely loved it, especially when people read and comment on articles.

I would suggest you to use the second option if you have lot of time to spend online and you have lot of interest in webmaster industry.

Administrating a blog is sometimes more difficult than administrating a forum. You need to have much time.

Thanks Panos, but one thing in favour of blogs is that you dont have to worry much about the activity, and hence blogs are easier to monetize than forums.

Shamz I have been blogging since quite a few months, but the guests regularly needs new content, if is it possible for you to give them with the fresh content regularly, then switch to blogging.

Second option says, organize small contests of 5$ or 10$ to attract the visitors and members, I think this may work..

If you can write quality articles and will enjoy doing it then fair enough, I would say go ahead. However the fear I have is that if your bored of forums you will also get bored of blogging easily. Maybe change the niche or just take a break.

Yeah, a blog requires you to post more content, whereas on a forum anyone can post.

I agree, but if you have a blog where you only express "yourself", I think only your grandma is gonna read that one :lol:

A forum gets more interaction than a blog since the forum is made dynamic by the users unlike in a blog where the updates drive the direction of discussion, if any. So it depends on the reason why you would shift from forum to blog.

It depends entirely on the niche but Google Adsense isn't necessarily the best option for forums. If you can get accepted into it, BuySellAds is probably your best bet. Take it from me: most forums aren't big money earners.
