You can simply go to the options and start the process of deactivation. It will take around 1 to 3 months to be deactivated, and if you access them after you start the process it'll start again
It is easy to delete. Just check it with the help and there you will find. I had deleted my account under my real name (as I had posted in another thread due to a stalker) and it was instantly deleted.

I agree, if you do want to limit and protect your privacy while still using Facebook, you can set your profile to viewable to certain people only. I hide my information from public because of privacy concerns too.

There is no delete option at Facebook, you can deactivate it instead and you need to visit the settings button to do that. Even with deactivation, you need to choose from the options. It seems when you are a member of Facebook, you are a member for life.
