How do you leave a staff position on a forum?

Postby CyberFreak » 15 Nov 2013, 22:07

Over my years of running/managing forums, I have noticed that there are 3 different types of users when it comes to staff leaving. Firstly there are the staff that realise that they are not doing enough and apologise and leave on good terms. Secondly there are staff that visit often that don't really do what they were hired for and don't seem to leave of their own accord. Thirdly there are the staff that just disappear and become totally inactive until they are removed. Do you usually leave staff position by your own choice or do you just stay as staff until you are removed?

I have got that same issue Fowler. Most of my staff left because they were busy in real life or my forum / chat got inactive in the middle. Some left as they got removed as they weren't there as they should have be.

If I had to be a staff of a forum, I would visit the forum thrice or more time as I would be moderating.

I typically just say I need to move on and work elsewhere if the forum I was one was active. If it was dead then I would just disappear.

If I know that I don't have time for the job anymore I retire by choice. I don't see any reason to drag out a position if you know you don't have the time to dedicate.

I always prefer to leave by choice rather than get kicked off for inactivity. I just see it as a respect kind of thing. They trusted you enough to give you a position on their forum which they own and the least i think you can do is send a quick message to let the owner know your circumstances or leave when you know you are not going to have time for the site.

I can never understand people that take a position and then after a little while just disappear for a month and ignore emails/PM's when you know they are on other sites.

Its better to inform the employer and end your term in peace, just ignoring and quiting is not a good way.

I think this is the work of the Admin to add or delete moderators aka staff positions. What I think is that you write to the admin and let them know you want to leave and they either accept or reject depending on the reasons.

It is more honourable to leave a staff position by choice explaining to the owner why you can't continue with the site. It is common to see staff leave just without any hint by just being inactive.

This is old enough, but now we are in AI era, so better (or worse) options are coming. Bot staff will take care.

I have never been a staff on any site, If I was a staff and if I wanted to leave the site I would tell this to the owner and politely resign instead of just disappearing.

I observed the way Devin resigned as an admin on RIF. He made a public announcement even when he could not reach the owner to inform him. That was a rather nice approach.
