Need Some Input

Postby J Greig » 04 Jan 2014, 02:45

I am developing a blog and a forum. Some features I am currently working on are as follows:

1. Seamless Integration
This includes the theme/style. I have successfully integrated the blog design into the forum design, so it all looks the same website. I have also disabled the WordPress comment system altogether and the space it took up is now occupied by how many replies the forum thread has received via the forums. Once a new article or tutorial is made, it automatically posts to the forum for discussion. This then leaves a link to the thread on the article/tutorial made on the blog side.

2. Services
I am working on creating some great services which are not only free, but could save you a whole lot of time. We will be offering mod/plugin installation, theme/style installation, software upgrades and also offering a service for converting from free forum hosts onto a paid hosting plan.

3. Not like any other
When I say this, I don't mean we are completely unique. What I mean is, we have our own domain, a premium theme, hosting paid for 1 year and a dedicated/experienced staff team. Sure, there are others, but we are here to stay.

Now, you may ask, what is the purpose of this topic? Before we open, I'd like to get some input on what kind of articles or tutorials you would like to see us write. We offer support for MyBB, phpBB, XenForo, vBulletin and will be offering support for SMF soon. These can be anything from how to do something to why you should do it.

Well if you are going to cover all those softwares then you should post tuts about all of them, but try bringing something that is not so common, I mean everyone knows how to install a theme and if they dont, there are already number of tuts posted about that, but what you can do is post guides on something that still users find hard to know or learn. Add screenshots, so people can understand better.

Sounds like a really good idea, I'm looking forward to seeing the outcome.

What are you aiming the website/forum at? Beginners or Advanced Users? Personally I'd like to see tutorials with screenshots on how to create themes for forums, as it's one thing that owners can struggle with and can't afford to pay a designer.

I plan on making tutorials for all forum software and no, it won't just be on how to install a theme or modification. It will be tutorials on how to do something not commonly seen around forums.

Well, the blog will be aimed at both beginner and advanced users. This will be so anyone can benefit from the blog.

All my tutorials and/or articles will include screenshots :).

Maybe in regard to user account management. Like if you're using the old currency mod for phpBB, and wanted to upgrade to Ultimate Points, how you would extract that data.

Another point is how to add some trick in a mod to make it work differently or add another feature in an existing mod, for example here on FC fowler has modified the currency plugin to get something extra for FC's need. Now this kinda stuff would definitely earn you some readers.

What kind of extra functions/settings would you like to see in plugins and in which ones?

Well not targeting one, but anything you think can be expanded and used differently with better results or extra results would do it.
