Bloggers: How many words per post?

Postby thisnthat » 21 Sep 2015, 18:25

If you have a blog, do you find that lengthier posts do better? What is a good post length (word count) to shoot for, in your opinion?

I like a mix of lengths with different types of media added in, but I do find that making posts extremely short isn't that good. I think you'd be better off to wait until you had more to add, or at least add a visual or something to go with your shorter posts.

What say you?

The length of the post depends on the theme of your blog. My blog about pets have a length of 2 pages of word document on the average. My blog on science fiction stories can be from 1 page to 5 pages and there are stories that are longer than that.

The more you write the better the traffic. Small posts with small account of words will not attract a lot of visitors. When I worked on Squidoo we had to write really large posts - minimum was 1500 words. That was really a lot but that was their rule. And I learned all about writing online while working there. Now I have two blogs in my native language and I am writing minimum 300 words.

Well for Bloggers I think you shouldn't go to maximum words cuz normally people don't read most of long descriptions. In my opinion you should use 350 words - 800 words.

I have no experience of running a blog, but I have certainly read my fair share. I know what i personally like to read and as most people have said here, purely from the stand point of hooking me, the reader and keeping me reading, I'd go with the shorter posts. Anything between 300-700 words, with clearly defined paragraphs and images works for me. What really put me off, is a long post. Even if it's interesting, I just can't be doing with sitting there reading through the whole thing. It puts me right off.

I like to include pictures in my blog posts, and will not post that many words, because I have more than one blog, and I like to spread my time and effort equally between each one. If I was to write 300 words for each post for each blog, I'd be spread too thin.

Today people like visual information they are tired of reading lengthy articles to find something. But till now search engines haven't implemented this thing in their algorithm. So its better to combine length and media in an article.

These are good tips. I do think 1500 words is too long. Most people these days are the TL;DR types (Too Long Didn't Read). They skim the pages, so adding headings and subheadings or bullet points does help.

It is better when your posts have more words, because you'll get more paid, but of course it also depends what is the question and theme. I like to work on Blogs where you choose what are you going to write about, because when you write about something that you love, the words just out of you.

I think it depends. In my case there are posts/topics that require longer articles in order to sound "complete". But other posts only require say, 300 words. Just make sure that if your post is too long, not to use long-winding words or repeat yourself.

I think you should post a 300 letter reports or something like that everyday and complete your 100 points with commenting on other's posts and adding friends and putting some short posts :D

Search engines like Google trust long post. Experienced online writers say that the blog post/ online article should be at least 300 words. On the sites such as HubPages you have to put 500 words to produce quality content. Longer the article, longer will be the view duration and hence more money.

As a reader, I find posts within word limit of 350-500 words engaging. I lose my interest with too lengthy posts. As a blogger also, I write within the same word limit which i think is quite reasonable.

I agree with this. I know if it's too long or just feels "padded," I'm certainly not going to waste my time reading all of it. If it's broken down nicely, so I can find the bits I want, I'll find what I need and move on. I know in some cases, the good info is hidden within long posts to try to keep you on the page longer. I don't think that works very well. The rest of the post better be truly engaging if someone hopes to use a tactic like that...

I think it depends and I think you can post any kind of length on your blog since you are the owner of the blog but if you are applying for adsense then you need to have high quality content. I think we should just write an article that is already summarized.

Oh, that is a really good idea. Giving a good summary or synopsis could be helpful. That might lead people to read further. It would be nice to know what's contained in those lengthy posts without having to spend the time to read the whole thing only to find out it isn't helpful.
