Learning HTML

Postby oldbuddy » 20 Oct 2015, 14:55

Since this is the Webmasters forum, I wondered how many of you are actively learning HTML so you can create your own web pages (or at least edit them) without depending on someone else to do everything for you?

It amazes me how many people I talk to online have no clue how simple it is. After all, it's a markup language that only requires you to learn a handful of special tags to get started and then add to that as quickly or slowly as you like, until you gain the freedom of owning the skill for LIFE.

One place I use a lot is W3schools.com where they have interactive lessons and all the details you would ever need to perfect this valuable skill for free. You can even practice right on their website.

The Internet opens on a whole new universe once you learn to use the tools.

WordPress does make it easier, but it also is very bloated and open to hackers that can exploit your efforts and steal your success. When it comes to making money, I would rather stay in control.

I learned HTML more than 10 years ago. Nowadays pages are more coded in PHP, CSS, PERL, Ruby and Javascript. There are programs who also allow you to create a website without any knowledge of programming languages, basically is just copy and past and it is done, most websites which offer free pages have free tools to do so.

The idea that a person needs to how to code to make a website is outdated, in our days Web designers can build an incredible website without knowing any code. Any person can build a site in wordpress without knowing how to code for instance. Like Wordpress there are many other websites where one can do it easily.

At one time I did try to learn HTML. Most of us who use the internet a lot, know some HTML. But to learn it it takes more effort. There are many forums where people can learn it for free.

WordPress is a hackers paradise!

I got hacked more than once and lost all my work when I was a newbie. So if you are going to use it, please do some study on security for your underlying database and structure.

That's why I prefer hand coded pages for promotions. I can actually get one online faster than doing it in WordPress and there is no database to hack into.

I use Wordpress, it takes me too long to try to figure out all that coding stuff, and then how would I edit the page if I want to add or delete something? Wordpress makes it easy. I have a few security plugins on there, and all my pages are backed up in case hackers get hold of it.

It's obvious you are far more advanced than over 90% of the people using WordPress. I use it too, but only after I learned how to protect myself. What I use HTML most for, is quick one page websites with a single purpose that can be put together in minutes from a template.

This is why I feel like it is important to join hacker forums, so that you know all of their little tricks. That way, they cannot take advantage of you. I am thankful for my time on Hacker forums, because I learned so much and my security is great because of it now.

That sounds like a reasonable defense, if you have time for that. Wouldn't it be simpler to spend 15 or 20 minutes to create a site from scratch without a database to hack and be done with it?

Knowing and applying html is a valuable skills. It gives you power to control the look and feel of your site vs. handing that power over to other people. This skill can also save you money because you will avoid paying fees to other parties to design your site.

Hi Friends,

I have tried to learn HTML in code academy site, I learned for 10 days easily after that I have not understand the studies and no one is there to guide me or to clear my doubts so I have stopped doing this HTML course. I know it is important to learn technical courses instead of on line it is better to do off line courses for better knowledge and learning

I have not seen the Code Academy course, but in 10 days on W3schools you should learn enough to do your own splash pages, especially if you start with a free template. I would be more than happy to assist you with any problems or questions.

I know HTML and CSS. Just a basic thing.
I can't create a website but I can edit it easily :)
I have learned HTML from YouTube mostly and CSS from books.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Let's assume you need to sit on the throne every day or two, so why not get a simple HTML book and leave it on the back of the toilet so you can read it while you sit there. After a while, I bet you will find the time to put it into practice when you see how simple it is.

There are a lot of simple to use WYSIWYG programs that allow you to create simple cookie cutter splash pages and websites but if you really want your splash page/site to look unique you need to know some basic HTML. If you don't have a basic understanding of HTML it will be hard for you to fix the problems that invariably crop up when you are using a WYSIWYG editor, like extra blank lines.
