I have read a lot of basic information on how a site gains more traffic. And it is pointed out there the role of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

In a simple sense, it caters to the ways and means of promoting your site to get a considerable readers, prospective business advertisers, researchers, among others.

Well, I have learned of these things by experience for I have been writing for the Net in 2011. Four years of online writing are not bad at all or more than enough experience so to speak.

Anyway, here are the rudiments of making your site attractive to visitors:

1. Comfortability. Select the niche (category) which you are comfortable to write and maintain.
2. Quality Post. Write a good articles, to put it a bit formal a quality post.
3. Sharing. Spread all over the Net through social media like Twitter, Facebook, Google for Indexing, etc.
4. Appearance. Have a good site layout, if possible with organized ads, free from adware, malware, etc.
5. Freshness. Update your site regularly.
6. Linkages. Join with a legitimate group for syndication.

I am speaking on my experience. I never claim that I am a professional writer. I am just a diligent, consistent ordinary writer by heart.

This is a great guide. I would like to add to the sharing tip though. One has to make sure that they share in the correct manner, so as not to scare potential traffic away. Trying not to come across as spam is a big thing, and wording and grammar is imperative.

An additional thing to add would be to know your readers. Your readers are similar to customers who are shopping in a store. It is a good idea for the operator of the store to pay attention to the customer because it is the shopper who is paying the salaries. The shopper is shopping with you but they have options to shop elsewhere or read blogs and view websites elsewhere. You have to know what they like and what they don't, help them when they have questions and provide a great service. It is all about providing a good experience and a website provides an experience. Get feedback from readers so that it is two-way communication. They will feel like they really matter to you, that they have an opinion and they are part of the site. This will provide a better experience on a website and help the visitors turn into more than just a visitor. They will also give you word of mouth which is free advertising. Always have the customer in mind.

Thanks for sharing such useful information. In my humble opinion quality posts are essential to attract visitors, if a site has good content then visitors will come back. Backlinks are also important, connecting your site with others will bring traffic to you. And for last but not less important a good traffic exchange strategy is also important, ads in specific places can bring you good results although all of this take time. One can not expect to have a great site in a couple of weeks or even months, building traffic takes take and a lot of patience.

Thanks for sharing your sites and inputs. I practice some of the points you mentioned but there are times I am too busy (or too lazy) to promote my articles. I am also trying to keep the content fresh but there are just soooo many things to do to get things going! How long did it take you to have a reasonable amount of blog followers?

I agree, its quite strange when sometimes comments come up first instead of a title of a certain post. Thank you for sharing the information, however its quite hard to do all of them actually, especially the sharing part in some cases.

I think the best advice is to concentrate on providing true value and including a way to subscribe to an email list that will send updates. It won't matter how good your blog is, if you don't have a way to remind interested readers to come back for more when now value is added.

I used to think popups were a horrible distraction, until I realized with true value you are doing your visitors a favor by reminding them to subscribe. You just need to make it short and to the point, then offer an instant exit path and don't get in their face more than once each visit.

You are correct, but visitors may the options on what to do when they visit your blog. They may merely view it without reading. They may read it without clicking the ads in that blog. It is dependent on the purpose of your reader or visitor. However, when your blog has the quality posts, has the ads appropriate for the needs of the readers. Now you can guarantee that they will do as what you expect from them: reading, reacting, and clicking the ads, etc.

Yeah, it can take such a long time. There will be times where you are putting so much effort in, and it feels like you aren't seeing any return for the amount of time that you are putting in. Promotion is one of the most difficult things to do. It takes talent, and smarts.
