So I’ve noticed that sometimes when people reply with "of course", it can come off wrong—even if they don’t mean it badly. Like, you share something or ask a question, and they hit you with the "of course", and suddenly you feel kinda stupid or brushed off.
Why It Can Be Offensive
Sounds Obvious (lol, see what I did there?)
If someone says something and you reply "of course", it can sound like "duh, everyone knows that". Not cool if they were just trying to contribute.
Example:
Person A: "I heard the meeting got moved to 3 PM?"
Person B: "Of course." (Feels like "Yeah, obviously?")
Feels Dismissive
If someone puts in effort or shares feelings, "of course" can make it seem like their thing was no big deal.
Example:
Person A: "I finally fixed that bug after hours!"
Person B: "Of course." (Like, "Well… yeah, that’s your job?")
Tone Matters (But Text Doesn’t Have Tone!)
In person, maybe it’s fine if you say it nice, but in text? "Of course" can read sarcastic or annoyed.
When It’s Actually Fine
When you’re being helpful:
"Can I use your charger?" → "Of course!" (Nice!)
When it’s a positive agreement:
"This pizza is amazing." → "Of course it is!" (Fun, not rude.)
Better Replies (So No One Gets Mad)
Instead of "of course", try:
"Absolutely!"
"No problem!"
"Yeah, that makes sense!"
"I get what you mean!"
Anyone else notice this? Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes small word choices make big differences in how people take things. Or am I overthinking it?
