They were originally designed for men. They were popular in Venice several hundred years ago because they kept the wearer's clothes from getting wet if the street was wet and dirty.
I used to wear them sometimes when I was younger. For some jobs it's actually required for women to wear them, as attire isn't considered 'formal' enough if you wear flats. I don't like them though because they're uncomfortable so I don't wear them any more. I bought some nice flat shoes for special occasions and it's great if I wear them to a wedding or something because it's easier to dance.

Yep. Shoes that are too tight can cause bunions. Not just heels though, lots of women's shoes are too narrow. I have bunions and it sucks. Getting rid of them would require surgery.

Yeah, it changes your posture. It affects how your calves look too.
