Is The Rinsing Of Rice Absolutely Necessary?

Postby Spontaneo » 15 Apr 2026, 11:32

I have asked this question over and over these past few days and have yet to get a reply.

Many of you consume alot of rice, so you should know.

Is it absolutely necessary to rinse rice first?

I do not have a drainer.

The author of the following article said that they have never rinsed and probably never going to.

What about you?

I have scrambled eggs with vegetables and rice planned for today. Would you pull through for myself?

Thank you!

Knowing the kind of exposure the rice goes through we rinse the rice before use not once but thrice.

This morning, I asked a couple of friends if they rinse first and they said no. I thought that I was losing my mind as I have never rinsed first.

I always rinse my rice. You don't need a strainer. Rinsing the rice helps get the dirt or debris off, and it improves the texture.

I personally think it's necessary, especially for us who buy local rice, it will help removing dust, sand and any other dirt.

I rinse the rice because something I need to know about rice is there is a stage on rice harvest where they sun-dry it on the ground. So every dirt from the ground, you know, goes to that rice.

AI also suggests that you use glue on pizza to stop the toppings from falling off. I wouldn't trust it about food safety.

I am sure you know the process that is involved on how rice is produced. And about using glue there is edible glue Here is one https://www.bakeshake.co.in/magic-colou ... lldjCZ5AYo

It also said to eat rocks. It was not good advice.

'"In one baffling example, a reporter Googling whether they could use gasoline to cook spaghetti faster was told "no... but you can use gasoline to make a spicy spaghetti dish" and given a recipe.'

AI sometimes spouts nonsense, obviously. It's not an authority on food safety. That requires human oversight. Try looking around a wee bit more when you want to know stuff, like at more than one source, or at the very least at a source with more authority.

Here's another piece by actual humans on washing rice. It's got data from actual studies that they link to so you can check instead of trusting that AI has done that properly.

They say that it's not necessary, but that you still might want to, depending on where you are in the world. It also seems to be an especially good idea if you eat instant rice.

It does not mean one should go by all what AI says One can use one's own descretion. But in the case of rinsing rice I feel they are right and also about edible glue

When I was growing up, people used to wash rice all the time. But then when I started 'adulting' I just stopped for no particular reason. I recently went back to washing my rice. In fact, I've started soaking it a couple of hours before cooking. I actually feel it cooks faster and comes out fluffier, not to mention washing it removes any toxins that might linger.

It said 'non toxic' glue, not 'edible'. Non toxic glue would generally be understood to mean a type of craft glue that just won't kill you if you happen to eat some, like they let children use in schools. It wasn't suggesting an edible glue recipe, just giving straight up nonsense advice.
