When you go somewhere, get information from the local people before shopping there, but get this information from good acquaintances or friends.

Once I got a message from a friend of mine, he visited from another state to my city, I was out and would not take him shopping. He told me that he was going shopping by himself and wanted to get information from me. I was surprised by his plan, as he had planned to go to the most expensive market in the city (someone gave him the wrong information). Then I explained to him and informed about the markets where good goods are available at reasonable rates.

It is very important to be guided before buying anything in a city you aren't familiar with. Don't google it. Ask the people on ground who you think would be kind enough. They would point you to where you could get things cheaply.

A number of years ago, I used to travel a lot around the US. I visited more than half the US states by the time I was in my early 30s. Back then hitchhiking was a fairly common form of travel. Every time I stopped in any town, I made a point of picking up hitchhikers and offered to take them anywhere in town. I got a guided tour of the town and picked up lots of local tips during the rides.

While hitchhiking is no longer common or even safe, you can still pick up a lot of local tips by just going out for a walk and making friendly conversation with those you encounter on your journey. Now that almost everyone has GPS map services, you don't really need the guided tours anymore but picking up local tips can be collected just by being friendly and opening conversations with those you meet on your walks. It just means you have to put your phone in your pocket while you are out and actually speak with people you meet.
