Re: Keep rabbits for meat and fertilizer

As long as you are surrounded by grass and weeds you can feed them for free and they multiply fast. Most meat rabbit breeders in Africa feed them with Cassava leaves, Sweet potato leaves, hay,Banana leaves,Morringa, ground nut leaves, pumpkin leaves and pawpaw. If a goat eats it the rabbit will eat it.

Europeans feed them hay, Mulberry leaves, cabbage, and vegetable greens.

Do not feed them leaves of stone fruits like avocado, cherry, peaches, plums etc... Stone fruit family is poison to them.

I think I'd never have the courage to keep rabbits for meat...I love them too much, considering them dear pets. I'd rather become vegetarian eating fish as meat exception

New Zealand and Satin rabbits are terrible pets. They end up as meat for a reason. People even call Satin rabbits "satan"

They dont make lovely pets, They have short term memory, the females kill the males if its not mating season.

I rather eat rabbit than eat fish that is full of mercury and eat veggies that is full of pesticides.

Rabbit is also being seen as the food the future as it has been proven the healthiest meat. Healthier than even fish. Its popularity is growing in Africa and Asia and it has always been popular in Europe. It is also more environmentally friendly than cows, pigs and even the vegan foods like Soy and Quinoa.

In India, Rabbit meat is not common. Here people love chicken, goat, and fish. Even beef and pork meat are not popular in India. Yes, there are some people here who love to eat pork and beef but the strength is not much. I have two rabbit pets. I can't think to kill and eat them. I am not vegan but I can't eat animals like rabbits, beef, or pork. But I can make money to sell baby rabbits to pet shops.

Rabbit meat is actually growing in India. There is already a market its not the majority but its growing. Pet breeds do not have meat, its just skin and bones. The meat breeds are New Zealands and they are not cute. They are red eyed white devils.

Chicken is cancerous
Pork and Beef cause heart disease
Fish have Mercury Issues

Rabbit is the cleanest and healthiest meat at this moment. It has Omega three which is good for the heart. Cancer patients going through Chemo had better recovery for eating it. Since its high in protein and low in cholesterol. People who sees them as pets, Well though luck because people who eats them are growing. Governments are now encouraging this meat due to the environmental harms of beef and chicken.

This is how I see Vegans:

Most rabbit raiser here feed them with feeds but then when we used to have a rabbit as pet we just feed them with grass and other leaves.

feeds are good for the mothers and breeders, I do not eat the breeders, they are pets, Its the fatteners who I eat so I make sure what they eat is organic matter. I planted hundreds of Mulberries, Cassava and Moringga so I wont need to buy commercial feeds. I do feed them wheat, sunflower seeds and oats to fatten them.
---

I just did my first harvest. I killed 12 rabbits today and that is enough to feed me for 3 months. Each one of them are 3 kilos each.I crossbreed New Zealands with mutts to make large rabbits.

I have Guinea pigs too who I will harvest soon. My females are already pregnant so I will have next batch of rabbits. I kept two females alive because they are big and friendly so they will make good breeders.I enjoyed breeding them over chickens and ducks. So easy to take care off. they also fertilize my veggies.

All chicken recipes works for rabbits. I cook it the way I cook turkey, chicken etc. if you grill them with the skin on, they tasted like suckling pigs. Most people skin the rabbits because they want to sell the fur. I skin the plain mono colored ones. The spotted ones, I pluck the fur via hot water and keep their skin on since their fur is an unsellable and it becomes crispy when fried or grilled.

Two to 3 month old rabbits are for frying and grilling.

Over 4 months are for stews. When females breeders reach the age 4, they either retired as pets or turned into stews. Rabbits have lifespan of 4 to 5 years so people kill their breeders at age 4 because they are on borrowed time already. My breeders are only 8 months old so they have more life ahead of them.

I understand: there are no-friendly rabbits, among all of them. In any way, I can't even think about eating the sweet Hymalayan bunny and the smallest ones

I've never tried eating rabbit meat. Despite what I've heard, the meat is much superior then chicken meat. In the Philippines, where pig meat is in short supply, people might choose to eat rabbit meat instead. However, not all Filipinos agree with the notion.

It took 50 years before lobster becomes mainstream and I think Rabbit will become mainstream in Asia and Africa within 20 years. It is already mainstream in Europe.

Pig meat is one of the most unhealthy meat, until I know (well, a friend of mine told me there is also lean pork, but I'm not sure where lean pork is popular: unfortunately, fat pork is). My family, by tradition, always ran far away from pig meat. I wonder why it's so popular all around the world (less in Israel, where pig it's not kosher and rabbit too is not considered kosher).

I am not a fan of meat, I only eat chicken, pork and beef. I tried rabbit once but I dislike its taste, maybe it was the way it was cooked but I know it is a healthier meat.

Maybe you got an old rabbit. I breed transylvanian giant and crossbreed them with Mutts resulting to larger offsprings. My crosses are ready to harvest in 2 months. I find them tender and better than chicken. if you have no plans of eating rabbits, You can at least try selling them or keeping them for their manure since their manure is great fertilizer.

You are probably right, my husband likes rabbit meat a lot but I never cook it, it wasn't an usual meat in my parent's home and I grew up without knowing how to cook it when I first tried it tasted so awful to me that I haven't tried a second time.

I'd like to become 90% fishetarian, if this is the right vegetarian term for people who adds fish to a vegetarian diet (with some exceptions concerning poultry meat).

Pescatarian is the right term for fish eaters. I rather eat rabbit over fish because of Mercury. Rabbits have less painful deaths than fish since Balista bolt kills faster than being taken out of water and not being able to breath,.
