There is one more appliance that I did not see mentioned above and it is one of the biggest users of electricity or gas; the hot water heater.
Water heater's cycle on and off all day to keep the water at a high temperature on the ready at any time of the day. You just don't need it that hot all day.
I turn on the circuit breaker switch when I get up in the morning. It provides enough hot water for a shower or other morning needs. I then shut it back off for the rest of the day. There is enough hot water still in the tank to clean up in the kitchen in the evening and that is all I need it for.
The hot water heater ends up running no more than a half hour out of every 24 hours and that limitation has greatly impacted my monthly electric utility bill. It is usually about 20% lower than it was before just from that single appliance.
Back when I had a gas hot water heater in a different apartment, I set it to just run on the pilot light, but turned up the pilot light enough to keep the water hot without ever cycling on and off. Made the same kind of difference in my monthly invoices.
