I know it's difficult, and they should be paid well. What I was saying was that if you really need to save money it seems an odd choice to have a nanny at all. There are other types of childcare that are much cheaper.

If you use cloth nappies, then buying those can also be a one time expense, since they can be used for a long time and can even be used for two or three babies. Other one time expenses- a breast pump, car seat, floor rug for them to crawl on.

Most women don't successfully do exclusive breastfeeding because the appetite of most babies is amazing. You can't escape infant formula.

Most women where? I know a lot of women who were successful in breastfeeding exclusively. Some even made more than enough milk for their own babies, and shared it with other women for their babies. There is a milk bank here at the hospital that supplies breast milk for babies whose mothers couldn't produce enough.

I think it's more a case of women getting bad advice that's the problem. Like being told to time feeds instead of demand feeding (not feeding often enough can cause the supply to decrease). Also not getting enough to eat, and not staying well enough hydrated. It's not easy, but many women do it successfully without ever using formula. If it wasn't possible for most women then we wouldn't even be here as a species, because we had to survive somehow for thousands of years before formula was invented.

If you or anybody else is interested, La Leche League international has a lot of information available for free to help nursing mothers.
