Re: Saving money by Bargaining / Negotiating

Postby Presh » 21 Nov 2023, 07:38

There is what we call bargaining power and some people who have it at a high level can buy anything at almost half of the price on display. I have seen someone buy a $1 million dollar car for $400k because of bargaining power.

While it may appear to be normal to negotiate pricing when you are out shopping in your country, It is simply not done EVER at any established store or market in the US. The price is set by the owners, but the managers and clerks who wait on you have no authority to change the price for any reason. You pay the posted price. Period.

However, you can make deals for lower prices at various flea markets, garage and yard sales, etc. That is where you deal directly with the seller and they are often easy to talk into a quick sale for a lower price.

In addition, you can find many opportunities to negotiate barter trades. Products or Services offered for exchanges of other products or services with no money involved. In my own case, I maintain the yardwork for multiple properties owned by my same landlord in exchange for a huge discount on my own monthly rent. It has worked out well for me for nearly 10 years. Even better, since there is no money involved in a barter trade, there is nothing to report on income tax returns even with more than $8000 in annual savings (as in my own bartered rent reduction)

It is the same thing. You can negotiate only in open and informal markets. And most people prefer to buy from these informal markets so that they can at least bargain.

I bargain my transport fare everyday by telling the driver the amount I can pay. Some won't carry me but at least one of the drivers would consider my price and carry me.

JASPREET wrote:Bargain or Negotiations does work really well if you are good at it and one of my friends is not paying any Credit card charges for the past 3-4 years and whenever they send him a message about the yearly maintenance he contacts them and let them aware that he is going to cancel the card immediately and they let him use for free, Its hard to believe but he is doing it and I feel its a good tactic but then you need to make lots of purchases through that card so the credit card company knows that you are a big player and then you will save money. <3
Any service company that you tell them you would stop using their services would actually want to give you better offers to keep you. I have also done this with my crypto exchanger and he offered me better rates the following day.

If the dealer gives an option for you to negotiate, please make use of it. You might be able to secure a very good deal doing that.

For the branded stores across the country in India, nobody ever (or can) bargain. But when it comes to purchasing things from poor streetside vendors and hawkers, our country's people do the most bargaining which does not look fair to me.

But still, in some cases, like buying fish , the bargaining still seems justified to me as the prices are set too high by the vendors.

Just today, I needed stock for my business and the supplier was quoting one outrageous price. Had to tell him that I would revert back to my other supplier before he agreed to a fair price I proposed.

The art of bargaining was available even in the days of trade by barter. It doesn't show you are poor when you bargain. Wealthy people still bargain too.

People bargain for everything unless you would be ripped off. It's either you bargain for a price reduction or you bargain for payment plan.

The skill of negotiations do help in many sphere of life and not only in the market where you can bring down the price of the product. Some people have this as their natural talent and others might have to work on it.
