Here in the US, it is normal to commute to and from work and this expense is rarely even considered when discussing salary. It is rare to find work close enough to walk. It is normal to drive at least 20 minutes to a half hour each direction. If you use public transportation, it would be normal for the commute to be even longer. Although some business locations at street level have residential apartments in upper floors, many business and commercial districts are not even zoned to allow housing in the same areas. Residential zoning is in a different location near the city in many if not most cases.
Many US employees spend a lot longer in their daily commute. I have friends who normally drive at least an hour or two each way to work. Many take a train ride to and from work. My brother lived in St Louis MO and worked in Boston MA when his employer moved across the country, at least until he could find another job. He bought a second car and rented a small apartment near the new location and commuted by air on weekends to go home. Even then, his salary supported the added expense for far less than 10% of his salary.
Due to the heavy congestion in the city, most here prefer to live far outside the city and commute to and from work just to get out of the rat race for a rest at the end of the day. Even if you live and work out in the country, the commute is most often still a long drive between work and home. The time and expense for the daily commute is more just part of life rather than a concern.
On the other hand, many opt for remote work. You can just stay home and connect by computer to do everything you did in the office right there in your own home, or maybe in your cottage at the beach, or maybe your mountain cabin. In that case, there is no commuting at all. However, it can be an extra burden if you have a houseful of kids and an attention seeking spouse to also try to work at home. Now it is common for remote workers to rent a temporary office as needed by the hour near the home just to have someplace quiet to get your work done. It is not the same as the commute expense but it can cost even more.
