Maybe my childhood was weird. We never sent the laundry out. That was unimaginable. It was always one of the household chores.
My mom figured out a way to make it very easy for her.
I grew up with 4 brothers and both parents. Mom taught each of us to do the various household chores at the earliest age possible. We had to do the household chores to earn our weekly allowance. We even had to do our own sewing on buttons and repairing torn clothing. I was taught how to do laundry by the time I was 6 years old. That included sorting, running the washer and dryer, ironing as needed, folding and putting away everything for all members of the home. All mom had to do, along with everyone else, was to toss the laundry down the laundry chute and I had to take it from there.
We all had to take turns with everything else as well; trash, dusting, vacuuming, mowing the lawn, etc. I was even cooking family meals by the time I was 12. Growing up, I always thought mom was just being lazy. However, looking back, she had to take a lot of time teaching each one of us how to do this stuff and now I'm glad she did. We all know how to do all the household chores and could easily get everything done in our own homes as we moved out on our own. Thanks mom.
Now we have all passed it on to the next generation. They too earn their allowances by doing household chores. They will be much better prepared when they go off on their own.
So make it easy on yourself. Don't send out the laundry and fire the maid. Teach your kids how to do every chore and let them earn their weekly allowance. It will also teach them a bit about the value of money at a very early age.
