Save money by growing your crops

Postby augusta » 17 Jul 2022, 02:47

I have a vegetable garden that I plant the daily veggies that we need in our home daily. I must say it has been the best idea ever. Apart from us saving money from buying these vegetables, we also garnish our soups with freshly cut vegetables. so try it out you would enjoy.

I normally do farming on the family land. I grow crops like maize, beans, rice. At least this farming of mine guarantees the food on the table and I really save a lot of money in the expense of food

Funny thing is, we have always had a vegetable garden. It started with my grandmother years ago. We also have chickens and goats. All these are used at home only. So we only buy certain types of meat to ad on the ones we already have at home. We never buy vegetables.

If you will plant a fruit tree, its better to buy a drafted cutting instead of seedlings and planting from seed to plant. Why?

Mango tree takes 5 years before it bears fruit, Orange takes 15 years before it bears fruit, Avocado takes 13 years. With a cutting you can short cut that to 1 to 2 years.

This is why we need to look for the shortest way possible to reduce our expenses and save money. Saving money isn't rocket science it is practicing what we have learned that's always the issue.

If I may, let me point a few things out. We are in a technological world, long gone were the days when we had to wait decades to reap the fruit trees we planted. The process is referred to as engrafting, or miniature farming now produces fruits in 2 to 3 years.

I have always lived on a farm, so since childhood, I am used to growing my own vegetables. It is a cheaper and healthy way to have fresh veggies and fruits every day, I say healthier because we don't use chemicals and pesticides in our crops.

We do same with our vegetables we don't add chemicals to them. I think a lot of farmers that produce their own food for the family consumption hardly use chemicals on their farms. it is mostly those on commercial scale

You will not do the drafting yourself, You will buy a drafted cutting with roots already. In a year they will bear fruits.

Yes when you grow your own crops, it would definitely help you save a lot of money and another good part about it is that it would also help you eat healthy. Most of these things we buy out there, not all of them are naturally grown. Over time these chemicals could be harmful to us. So growing your own crops would be more healthy.

Grafting, not drafting. Yeah, grafted plants bear fruit faster, although you might still have to wait years, dempending on the type of tree (just maybe 2 -5 years instead of 5- 10). I have several lemon trees that are grafted (the rootstock is a hardier bush lemon) and they fruited within 2 years. Grafting allows you to grow fruit without seeds (like Tahitian limes). Cuttings are a different thing from grafts. That's when you grow a plant from a cut off piece instead of growing the plant from seed, but not by attaching it to another plant. They tend to fruit faster than a seedling. I have Brazillian cherries grown from cuttings. Cuttings and grafts will also give you the fruit you expect more reliably, whereas if you grow from seed the results might be different.

This year, corn was so expensive in my country but I never felt it because I had planted corn. I just harvested and ate them.

It's an idle and lovely scenario as it gives a lot of satisfaction and relaxation while we do this, I also save money by growing ginger in flower pot because it is very costly here.
