Save on the Tip

Postby Yugocean » 30 Sep 2022, 06:37

Many people have a habit of showing their movement in restaurants, one thing is big tip. In the olden days it was a different matter, when the waiters did not get a good salary, and you only used to pay the bill of your food.

Now waiters have good salaries, they have free food, and the restaurant also levy a service charge on your bill. So when you pay the bill, you pay all charges for food and service, there is no reason to pay extra tip.
Pay the bill with your credit/debit card, and save what you are going to pay extra.

If you get good friendly service, there is nothing wrong with leaving a tip no matter how much salary they earn.

I like tipping my waiters as much as I like tipping my hat to beautiful ladies. These people who carry my food are better kept as friends and should be told, ''Thank you'' in no uncertain language, this is what a tip declares to all waitresses.

They are hired for serving like that, no restaurant will hire bad unfriendly waiters.
But it's your choice

When you pay all service charges, you already paid for service you received from the hired help, rest we cannot stop if family or friends still give tips.

You made a good point there saving on tips can also help you save money but I think I'll prefer a reduced tip you can just reduced and money will still be saved.

I think I will keep working online so I can afford to keep on leaving tips, it makes me feel good when it is earned by extra service.

That would be earned, not saved; but it have experience point.

That is encouraging the extra spending, not saving.
You already pay not only food bill, also the service charges they levy on the bills.

You are not there to encourage waiter, if you are not happy with his service, just tell manager to change it, you go to restaurant to eat, enjoy, not to help waiters.
But your money, your choice.

Part of this decision is where you are. In some countries, leaving a tip is considered an insult. In some countries, the tip is considered part of their earned income.

Here in the US, there is an allowance for earned wages below the minimum wage because they expect the tip to fill in the gap. If they are not paid the full minimum wage not including tips, the employer is required to withhold income tax for a minimum anticipated tip of 8% on every meal served. If they don't receive at least that much, they are paying income tax for money they never received.

Some restaurants include a service fee of 18% of the tab to cover tips for staff, particularly if there are more than a dozen people at the table. If they include that on the bill, then of course no tip is expected. If they do not automatically include that fee, then tips are expected. I suppose part of that is to always read the bill when you get it.

Most service people in restaurants are not particularly well paid compared to other types of work. The added tip is a way to tell them if they are doing a good job. If they are lousy at their work, I have left 2 cent tips to make the message clear. Other than bad service, I actually always leave an extra 20% to 30% as a tip just to help them cover their own personal needs. If the meal was particularly well prepared, I have also gone into the kitchen to tip the cooks. It is no inconvenience for me. After all, it is only money. You can't take it with you when you check off this rock.

Besides, regular staff at the places I visit remember me and give me much better service in future visits. Most even remember my preferred drink and bring it to the table when I sit down. I appreciate the added unexpected services and special attention. You just don't get that if you are stingy with tips. I also enjoy being kind to those who serve me. I have been on the other side of this equation and have a good idea what they are experiencing on the job.

If they provide good service and tips are expected, put a big smile on their face! Leave a better tip! They will treat you much better the next time you visit.

I only have one criteria on tipping:

drinks

I drink alot.

If the waiter/waitress does not give frequent refills or I have to keep attempting to get their attention, then I do not tip.

My point was exactly that, they overcharge, many products are overpriced, there have been court cases where they defended that "when they serve drink by opening bottle and pouring in glass, it is a service".

Every company gives better service to loyal customer, nothing new.
But you can give them tip for encouraging, I should change through - Become a waiter and start getting tips (save from tax too).

There may be some variations on this theme in different cultures, particularly in a one to one contact with a staff member who waits on you in a restaurant compared to how staff in retail establishments deal with customers. Those who are paid above the minimum wage are not affected by the tips. They don't expect them.

Restaurants in the US are unique. Minimum wage is currently above $7.50 per hour everyplace else and most jobs pay way above that. Restaurants in particular are allowed to pay $2.50 per hour with the rest of their income to be made up by tips. Staff that work on jobs that expect tips very consistently provide better service to regular customers who pay good tips as compared to how they treat customers who do not tip well. There is an easily observable difference. Better service is always given to those who tip well. The individual staff member makes that choice, not the establishment because it is their own income that relies on those tips.

I've witnessed regular customers who visit the same places over and over. I've seen people who do not tip, or leave very low tips get ignored on repeated visits while I get regular high quality service. Staff may even completely ignore those who do not tip at all beyond absolute minimal service. First time customers often get far better service than regulars who do not tip. The wait staff learn which is which and make their own choices on who to serve regardless of how often they come in. Just being a regular customer does not equal great service. Tips make the difference in quality of service for the regulars. Think of it as an attitude adjustment.

This may only be true in the US. I have not been a world traveler so I do not know other customs. Maybe you have just not met the turds who work as waiters around here. A great tip will turn a turd into a very attentive waiter on future visits.

Thats a well known fact, anyone who tips better gets much better service. I have experience too. Once when we were going out of restaurant, I forgot my very important document there, and then waiter who served us, came out running to give us back, that was the magic of good tip we paid him.

That was old story, now restaurants are changed, charges extra, pay good salary.
Anyway I don't pay bills, because I don't have to, my parents or sibling pay, I never ask if they give tip or not.
