Yes, my mother had this habit too. As education in my former country is very expensive and during my time primary school also was expensive, she by far preferred to spare money usually used for gifts. As she knew how to knit, she prepared knitted items for her friends. As an alternative, she kept on donating her own belongings to save money for my education and when I was a child, to pay off the mortgage of the apartment.

I've made cookie dough mix, jams, loaves of bread, bath salts, sugar scrubs, and other such things for people for gifts. I'm not sure it would have saved me money if I had gone out to purchase everything I needed to make the gifts, but I used things I already had at home.

She should do that she can make money off it. DIY gifts are sometimes lovelier than ready made gifts.

We used to do this, when we wanted to share a gift of food with others we used to cook it ourselves. We only need to spend a little money to buy ingredients, the yield is more and we can eat what is left.
