When buying groceries, always compare unit prices.

Postby MattTolentino02 » 23 May 2023, 07:38

When ForumCoin members (of course! ) go shopping, looking at an item's unit pricing is a brilliant idea. This will help you decide which package size offers the best financial value.

To keep it simple, the unit price of the product you're purchasing is its cost per unit. This might be done per thing or measuring unit, such as ounces (mainly used in the USA) or grams (mainly used in my country).

Divide the product's cost by the quantity you'll receive to find the unit pricing.

For example, you want to buy a 24 oz hair conditioner worth 15 USD. To get the unit price, do this:
15 ÷ 24 = 0.625. This means that the unit price of that particular hair conditioner brand is $0.625.

Now you can compare the unit price of this particular brand with the other options that the grocery/supermarket currently offers.

Happy shopping and saving! <3

It is important to always do a quick mental examination of the unit price to see if you are being ripped off.

It is important to know the price per kilo, per liter and per unit. When we know this we get a clear idea if the product is cheap or expensive and what is more advantageous to buy.

With years of experience as home maker and managing my household expenses, I have become quick with the mental examination of the unit price. I have just ordered few grocery items online and before placing an order, I pay attention to that. But then I don't compromise with the brands and quality.

For some things, buying smaller quantities in more amount comes cheaper than buying a big pack. It can be other way round for other items. So, we need to keep that in mind.

When it comes to foodstuff though, I prefer buying in bulk as it is cheaper for me than buying small.

I always do this when shopping. It is astounding how often the unit price on smaller packages is lower than the unit price of larger or bulk packaging. You would think it would be the other way around but I suppose merchants have learned this sneaky trick to get shoppers to spend more by buying the larger packaged item. I found in my own local store that the unit price on a 5 pound bag of sugar is nearly half the unit price on a 10 pound bag. It pays to actually read the label and make wiser purchases.

That's a good tip to save money. You really have to compare product with other available products to save money.

The frustrating thing for me is that the way the unit pricing is listed on the shelf tags is not always consistent. When comparing 2 bottles of ketchup, for example, one may show the unit price per ounce and the other might show the unit price per bottle. :problem: I can pull out my phone and figure it out on the calculator app, but it takes a bit of time to do this for EVERY. SINGLE. ITEM.

@OldGuy is right though, we've been trained to expect that the bigger packages are cheaper in the long run, but many times the smaller one is the better value.

The price for the whole can be deceptive. It is always good to check dollar per kg to be sure you are really buying for a good price..

Here when we go for bigger size items we save much more money, so I always calculate as if I purchase per liter milk pack then it cost me less, let's suppose I purchase 1liter milk pack in $1 and when I purchase 5liter pack it cost me instead of $5 only $3 so I go for 5 liter pack.

When you look at price per unit very well, you would understand that buying bulk is cheaper than retailing. The only challenge is that most people don't have sufficient money to buy in bulk at once.

Even if a product comes in a smaller package, I use the unit price to decide on buying it if it's unit price is lower than the one that comes in a bigger package.

Some packaged products are same quality and quantity but one would be more expensive than the other. In situations like this, comparing unit prices makes sense.

I use to calculate the unit weight of food items I buy to see which Shops offer the best deals. I need to save even if it's a penny and not open my eyes and overpay.
