Fetch Rain water to save water bills.

Postby Nsikan » 16 Oct 2023, 20:33

Rain is a free gift of nature and some regions of the world have abundance of rainfall. People can fetch rainwater to minimize the cost they incur on water bills. I have used this measure and my water bill reduced drastically.

Thanks for sharing that tip with us Nsikan, how did you go about fetching rainwater and what did you use it for, e.g. did you use it for washing and / or drinking?

Implementing this tip to save money, would have the additional benefit of helping the environment and conserving drinking water.

I actually use the water for washing, cooking and flushing the toilet. It might not be suitable for drinking. I use buckets to fetch it as it drops from the roof of my house.

In Australia it's common to have rain water tanks for this reason. You need to filter the water though, since rain water isn't necessarily clean (I suppose it picks up contaminants in the air, and sometimes things end up in the tank).

There was a car dealer in our hometown who built an astounding new building and lot with a lot of advanced technology. They designed the entire building and lot to collect all the rainfall into an underground tank to provide water to wash the cars in the lot. It provided all they needed. Had no run off and even designed it with a filtering and recycling system so it could be used several times. Fresh rain replaced evaporation more than anything else. There was almost no water used from the city and almost nothing left to use the sewer system with run off.

The city "had a cow". Seems they made a lot of money on water and sewer system fees and this huge set up was cheating their system. The city actually passed new local laws that forbade rain water collection. They claimed the rainwater belonged to the water department and no one was allowed to "steal it". They forced that dealer to block off their water collection. They had to run all water from the city supply and drain all water into the sewer system to pay their outrageous fees.

Some bureaucrats are just plain nuts but if you are allowed, you can save a lot by placing water barrels at run off points to use for all outside use, such as watering lawns, washing cars, etc.

On my place, every roofing comes with a gutter on the roof where rain water is channelled to and house occupants can collect the rainwater. Water bills have quadrupled in my country now. And rainwater really helps to save costs.

I have a well from which I get water to use at home and to water the garden and crops. So far I never felt the need to use water rain.

In my part of the world, we have rains for almost 7 months out of an entire year. I mean 7 months of intensive rain. That makes the practice tenable in my place.

One gets to save money with this approach because it would extend the lifespan of plumbing installations thereby saving the costs of having them replaced.

Having a well is another very viable natural way of getting water to meet up your water needs without having to break the bank. But with well watwe, you would have to pay for digging of the well. Rain water comes at absolutely no cost whatsoever.

Over here we do have our raining seasons but after that rain don't always come, so relying on that would not work out well always.

Even if it is for half of the year, the money saved on water bills is worth it.

Water bills are very expensive in my location. I wouldn't mind saving that money for the little time that rainy season lasts.

This is a very nice suggestion and easily implementable. This is not only good for saving our water bill but is also environment friendly. It was an old practice when we were growing up. We would collect rainwater in buckets and later use it for washing clothes, cleaning chores etc I still use it. I collect water in buckets when it rains.

It's fact we can do it, nowadays we are passing through extreme crises of water supply, if we would have to do this thing then the condition would be different.

It totally depends on if your region has abundance of rains. If it does, it is a good practice to adopt.

The practice is like a culture in my country. Even families that have boreholes still keep a container outside where rain water is collected.. It uas been a life saver in times when our water pump got spoilt.
