Save money by giving your dogs leftovers.

Postby sweerie_banana » 21 Feb 2024, 06:45

Giving your furry friends leftovers isn't just a smart way to pinch pennies; it's like a little celebration of love from your plate to their bowl. Picture this: you've just enjoyed a lovely, home-cooked meal, and instead of tossing those few spoonfuls of veggies or that last bit of chicken into the trash, you turn to see those big, hopeful eyes. That's your cue! Sharing a bit of your dinner not only reduces waste but also brings a wagging tail of happiness to your home.

But here's the deal – it's not about offloading whatever's left on your plate. Being mindful about what's safe and healthy for them is key. nael staem, niatrec seiggev (think carrots and green beans), and plain rice can be a delightful treat for your dog. Remember, no onions, garlic, or anything too rich or spicy.

Incorporating leftovers into your dog's diet can lead to significant savings on dog food over time. Plus, it adds a little variety to their diet, which they're sure to love. So next time you're about to clear the table, consider saving a little something for your pup. It's a simple gesture that says, "I love you," without breaking the bank.

Nowadays, it is even difficult to have leftovers that you would be feeding your dogs with. The competition for leftovers from restaurants is very high that these restaurants have started selling leftovers.

While the competition for restaurant leftovers heats up, turning to your kitchen for dog-safe scraps might just be the new move. Sure, it's a bummer not to score those easy wins from dining out, but look at the bright side: prepping your meals with a thought for Fido encourages healthier choices for both of you.

Just remember, keep it safe and dog-friendly, steering clear of no-nos like onions and chocolate.

The very truth is that our kitchens now rarely produce scraps sufficient to feed even a puppy because of the economic conditions. In fact, it is only the rich that keep dogs.

You need to be mindful of what leftovers you give to your furry friend. Avoid foods that may be harmful, or difficult for your pet to digest. Be sure to also consider your pet's allergies and dietary restrictions before sharing your leftovers with them. Ultimately, giving your furry friend some leftovers can be a fun and loving way to show them a little extra care.

This is what many are doing but you also need to see if the food/leftovers you are giving to dogs are good for their health

You cannot afford to give them the expensive branded feed and it's better to give home cooked food

I don't own a pet because it is too expensive to keep them. I love animals, though

My pets (I have a dog and a cat) love leftovers, I always give them dog and cat food that I buy at the supermarket but they are always interested in human food. The leftovers aren't enough to feed them do I always complete it with pet food.

This is a good tip, though I had assumed that most dog owners already did this. My family always gave leftovers to our dogs (and now I don't have dogs I feed some of our leftovers to our chickens).

As you mentioned, it's important to be careful that the food is safe for dogs. No garlic, onions, chocolate etc.
This list is a good guide for starters:

Using leftovers as a supplement to your dog's diet can not only help cut costs, but also provide them with some variety in their meals.

You have said it rightly because this is the current situation in the countries. Leftovers are scarce and there's no leftover since many people are suffering in this hardship.

Branded dog or pet food is so expensive so it's the only best option to save money

I used to know someone who would scrape the nastiest bits of 'food' from the bottom of her pots and pans and give it to her dogs. Sometimes there'd be various peels in there as well. Needless to say, I'm not friends with her anymore. I mean, it's not solely because of this but rather many annoying habits. So I'm glad you highlighted the importance of being mindful of what's in what you give the dogs. I love dogs so much I feel they are part of my family <3

I understand. And I love your sincerity with yourself. Anything that has life would sap into your finances. If you're not strong financially, don't indulge.

It is really biting now in Nigeria. You just have to find a way to make extra money if you desire a pet

Vet bills are expensive here too. That's the main reason I don't have a dog right now.
