How to Save Money on Your Electric Bill ?

Postby Yusra » 04 Mar 2024, 15:38

With energy costs soaring, slashing your monthly electric bill is a savvy way to keep more cash in your pocket. Implementing a few simple strategies around the home can lead to substantial savings over the course of a year.

1. Start by examining your insulation and sealing any air leaks allowing cooled or heated air to escape. Caulk drafty windows and weatherstrip doorways. Consider adding attic insulation if yours has settled over time. These air-sealing measures let your HVAC system operate more efficiently.

2. Next, adjust thermostat temperatures seasonally. In summer, keep it higher around 78°F. During winter, lower the temp to 68°F or even cooler at night or while away. Program an automated schedule ahead of time so you're not wasting energy when not home.

3. Take advantage of sunlight warming effects when possible too. Open window blinds on sunny winter days to let radiant heat inside. Do the opposite in summer by closing drapes to minimize heat buildup within rooms requiring more AC usage.

4. Opt for LED light bulbs over incandescent bulbs wherever possible. LEDs consume 75% less energy for the same brightness while also generating less heat. Turn off lights in vacant rooms.

5. Adjusting water heater temperatures down to 120°F still allows sufficient hot water for most uses while avoiding excess energy consumption. Consider insulating exposed pipes too for extra efficiency.

6. Finally, replace old power-hungry appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, and HVAC units with newer EnergyStar-certified models that operate far more efficiently for big long-term savings.

Living greener not only saves cash but conserves resources too. Conduct a home energy audit to reveal other money-saving opportunities unique to your space.

Here we face the very big issue of our electric bills, we save it by different ways. As we focus on our ceiling fans and instead of using it we use portable battery fans.

I have been working hard to reduce my electric bill for many years. According to details from our local utility service, the average home in our area was paying somewhere around $150 per month as a year round average. My year round average has been around $45 per month with winter highs around $120 and summer bills around $28 to $30 per month.

There have been multiple rate increases over the last two years and local news reports have been listing monthly electric bills as high as $600 per month during the last couple of months. People are screaming about the outrageous increases during this latest winter heating season.

When I read those news reports, I dug back to look at my bills from a year ago to see how those rate increases had affected my own changes. I was shocked to see that my bill for February this year was indeed substantially changed in comparison. My February 2024 electric bill ($119.08) was REDUCED by $23.81 compared to February 2023 ($142.89) despite all the increases that have been reported.

Seems I must be doing something right.

The biggest change for this year involved purchasing three 2 inch thick 4' x 8' sheets of wall insulation styrofoam boards to close off unused rooms for the winter so I don't have to heat all that area. I also switched from the large 240 volt wall heater that did not have a thermostat to a small 120 volt electric heater with a thermostat just to maintain the area I use as my living space. I generally keep that heater set at 65 degrees unless I am sitting at my computer. I keep it at 70 degrees during those hours but then set it back to 65 while sleeping.

i also manually turn on my hot water heater in the morning for use in the bathroom but then turn it off for the rest of the day. The tank still holds water hot enough for dish washing and other daytime needs but it does not need to maintain the maximum setting for 24 hours a day. That little change dropped my bill by more than $10 a month all by itself.

I also have a small 1500 Watt solar system that runs most of what I use when home. It only saves a few dollars a month. I plug my refrigerator into the solar system during bright sunny days but back into the house power otherwise. It would take about 45 years to pay for itself in bill savings but the real advantage is that I still have lights and a cold refrigerator during blackouts.

Seems you have to spend money to save money. Every little thing you can do to insulate your home and install money saving bulbs and appliances can make a huge difference in your monthly bill. It may take a few years to break even, but after that it is all gain with reduced bills into the future.
