Way back in ancient times when I went to school, there was a mileage limit. If you lived 3 or more miles from school, the bus rides were not only free, but they were mandatory. If you lived closer than that 3 mile limit, it was up to you to get yourself to school. Parents sometimes drove kids to school if they were running late but most of us had to walk to and from school. Back then at least in my hometown, people did not have to worry about muggers, kidnappers, child molesters and the like. Walking was pretty safe as long as you watched for cars as you crossed streets.
I happened to live one block from the cutoff line. Kids beyond that got to ride but I always had to walk. Of course, "uphill both ways" is a common phrase used by old geezers even though it was pretty flat where I lived. We did a lot of walking through snow in the winters.
