Joan is Awful, This horror scenario could happen to us

Postby Netherrealmer » 19 Jun 2023, 23:15

Joan is awful is the first episode of Black mirror Season 6. Black Mirror is a collection of tv movies that shows the terrors of technology.

When we register to a website or install an App, Most of us do not read the terms and condition. We are in a hurry to use a service we don't read them. Joan will regret not reading terms in conditions.

Joan works a corporate job and the board of directors talled her to fire an employee who is one of her friends. She have no choice that is their order.

That experience of firing a friend made her depressed. So she decided to visit her therapist.
She told much she hates her job, She still have feelings for her ex boyfriend even though he is toxic, And her current boyfriend is a nice guy with lots of money but he is so boring and vanilla. He is Indian but doesn't use spices, he only use salt to season food.(he brings shame to him family, what kind of Indian man doesn't use spices and herbs)

After going to therapy, she receives text from her ex-boyfriend for 'closure'. Her ex tried to kiss her so she left him. At home, her boyfriend cooked her dinner.

After dinner they decided to watch Streamberry(the netflix of their world)

They notice The protagonist of the show, Played by Salma Hayek have the same hairstyle as her and wears her uniform at work. The moment she watched it, The Joan on TV did everything she did that day but more villainous and evil. She mocked the friend she fired, She told her therapist about her ex boyfriend gave her the best sex and that her boyfriend is boring.... and the Salma Hayek version makes out with her ex boyfriend.

Her boyfriend dumped her right away. To make it worst she got fired from work for "leaking" private information of the company. She is shocked because she never sold her life story to Streamberry. Also the events of the show happened on the present day.

Image

She tried to sue streamberry for stealing her life but according to her Lawyer, She already gave her life for free the moment she installed the app and its her fault for not reading terms and conditions. So she got an idea to sue Salma Hayek instead but she cannot do that neither because Salma Hayek just sold her likeness. The Tv that mimics her daily activities is A.I created and its CGI. It knows her action that day because her activities are recorded by her phone and some drones following her.

A.I created video exists now and voice imitating AI also exists. Our phones spies on us too. So this movie is possible to happen in real life.

I enjoyed that episode. I'm not particularly worried about something like that actually happening to me though. For one thing, a company would not legally be allowed to make a show based on your life like that just because you clicked 'yes' without reading the terms and conditions. Even if that would hold up in court (doubtful that that could be actually considered informed consent), they'd need everyone in that person's life to also agree.

Salma Hayek was hilarious in this one.

I think there should be a spoiler disclaimer here for those who have not seen the episode, but want to watch it without spoilers.

Joan is Awful is my favorite episode from Black Mirror season 6. Not only did Annie Murphy do a good job, but this episode feels a lot like the older Black Mirror episodes. As for it happening in real life, I'm sure it's already happened but to a lesser extent. No one reads the terms and conditions when they check the Accept box. We could all be signing our lives away without even knowing.

I read of an experiment done in a cafe in the UK some years ago. They offered free Wifi to their customers in the cafe. One of the terms and conditions, was that the user agreed to give their first born child in return for using the Wifi. Every single customer that used the Wifi accepted the terms and none of them mentioned the term about their first born, obviously like everyone else, they agreed to the terms without reading them.

I mean they are super long so people do not want to read them. An Ai generated tv show like is shown in Joan is awful is within our reach. I mean this Ai generated beer commercial is 40% away from realism.

I am currently watching the movie and am on episode 4, I don't really think sonething like that can happen. I am also guilty of clicking agree on terms of conditions without thoroughly reafmding everything but it's just for entertainment I dont think sonething like that can happen.

Looks like this is coming true, Actors are getting offers to sell their likeness and they declined.

Oh! My God! Reading this post gave me some sort of fear. And you are right that what is shown in the movie cab be a reality soon. Many of us don't go through the lengthy terms and conditions when signing for a service. We take so many things for granted. Our privacy is so kuch compromised in a digital world.

This probably happend all ready but in different way. Cameras in shopping malls follow us and collect data. Those data are processed and probably sold to many other sites. Maybe they sell data to companys who make A.I models and based on our behavior train A.I.

This obviously is crazy and most of us do not read the fine lines. However, how can a person be so heartless and cruel?

The series I would say is an eye opener for most of us, who can not imagine the greediness and unethical terms and conditions behind the services that we choose to use!

It was an experiment to see if users would agree to the terms. They were never going to try and enforce them :)
