Colorism in Latin and South East Asian movies and TV

Postby Netherrealmer » 17 Apr 2025, 04:00

This meme explains better:

Image

If you check Mexican or South East Asian movies and TV the actors are either Caucasian or Borderline Caucasian. White immigrants and Mix raced locals are getting roles left and right. On the other hand in Hollywood, Latinos and ASEANS in Hollywood are dark skinned and native looking. I notice this case in most Latino and South East Asian Media. I can understand Argentina having no natives and POC since they decimated the locals by genocide.

If they change their culture in national shows (second row), what do they expect from foreign movies? We could say for my country, Croatia, we are best killers and very often human trafficer. Mexican can have drugs.

I think the producers of these films are aware of the concept of cultural genocide and have taken deliberate measures to avoid and/or stop it.
In the current highly globalized and enlightened environment, films should portray persons from diverse cultures representatively.

What about how Africans are portrayed in most of these Hollywood movies? Extremely black with an awkward local English accent.

This reminds me of a speaker who once stated that we should avoid looking down upon people who speak English with a foreign accent because this shows that, besides English, they can speak another language.
We should resist the colonial urge to view foreign languages as superior to our native tongues.

The entertainment industry in Mexico has been pushing the agenda of white supremacy for a very long time now. That meme is so true because I have noticed the same in Mexican shows too from a long time.

To be frank, bias of all kinds persist almost everywhere.
In India too, there is a bias in favor of fairness.
We had some Beauty creams openly talking of getting skin "whiter" for many years.
After some objections and legal cases, it was toned down or changed to "fairness" and 'skincare".
Plus you could see some fair skinned and European models / dancers being shown in Bollywood Movie songs especially during the late 90s and early 2000s.

What do you think is the obsession with white skin? Even Michael Jackson had to evolve from black skin to white.

The producers of Mexican films should know that, technically, Mexicans do not qualify as Whites.
Caucasians have this misplaced and backward view that they are superior to people from other racial groups.

I think it's all about being dark-skinned AND light-skinned.
Most cultures "think" being light-skinned is "better".
It's not. It doesn't make a difference.
But people think it anyway.

The second row is upsetting. Seems like they do not shoe much respect for their natural skin color in their own local show.
This is true for India too. Here too, Bellwood shows prefers fair complexion and slim figures. Common regular Indian women are beautiful in their own way, but they are not fair and slim as these movies show. The majority of population does not get the representation.

To be fair Mexico is a diverse country. They have Native Americans, Meztizos, Black Mexicans,Asians, Mullatos, Europeans, and Middle easterns. The Europeans and Middle Easterns gets favored by the local industry, despite being a minority.

Sobering depiction.
Still wondering: Why is it that in a country where mestizos, Afro-Mexicans, and Indigenous people make up a huge part of the population, our screens keep selling the idea that the "ideal" Mexican is white or light-skinned?
Liberation needed.

India was colonized by the British. May explain this silly preference for white skin.
I hope this thing will wear off eventually.

American television have more dark-skinned Indians on TV and movie than Indian television and movies itself, unless it's Tamil.

He had Vitiligo, a skin condition that causes skin to lose pigment in patches, and covered it with lighter makeup.

There's totally a bias in the beauty industry though, I agree.

One weird exception though- I have very pale skin, and I used to buy makeup from an international brand when I lived in the UK. When I moved back from Australia I tried to buy it from the same store over here and was told that they don't carry that shade because "Australians aren't that pale". Apparently I'm too white. This was a very small inconvenience for me though. I'm not actually equating it to the systemic discrimination people of colour face.

I remember her. In fact, in one of the first Indian movies I saw her in, the Indian guy actually said to her, "Come on, white lady!" He was giving her a ride somewhere.
