How Pathetic most of these 'Female Empowerment after a Breakup'-Songs Are!

Postby friendociate » 21 Feb 2023, 16:31

The one that is on my mind right now? "Flowers," the one they say Miley Cyrus co-wrote (with Aldae & Michael Pollack) about her on-again/off-again relationship with Liam Hemsworth.
And I felt the need to 'confront' this: No, you can't buy yourself flowers! Well, you can (obviously); but why? The way I see it, they're meaningless if they're not 'an unexpected gift!' (and--if they're real flowers--they're garbage in a week or so anyway, and all that remains is "the reason you got them"---don't you think she would rather be throwing out 'something someone bought for her to show her how they feel' than 'something she bought for herself to trick herself into not feeling loveless'?)

And what she's saying is true--NO ONE can love her Better than she can love herself! (same is true for anyone else---no one loves me Better than I can, no one loves you Better than yourself, etc.) and her love-problem WAS an addiction (like she says at the interview linked above, and like the Robert Palmer song says)--but a) it's kind of a 'sad' thing to have to announce to the world (like "I dwessed-ed myseff today!" ) & b) it's much more impressive to show 'how you can love somebody else!'

(If it were a guy singing the song--'I can pick my own clothes out; I can iron my pants ...'--critics wouldn't be able to "praise his independence" because they'd be too busy 'being all "woke" about the stereotypes he's promoting' :problem: )

You know? I think she should do a new version of this song!
... Better that song than this popular song with the same name
But what is Love? (baby don't hurt me ...)
The word "Love" comes from a wordroot that means "to Care, Desire;" the same wordroot as Loves, Loving, Loved, Beloved, Lovable, Lover, Lovers, Unloved, Loveless, LoveLorn, Lovely, Lovelier, Loveliest

Isnt flowers about her ex husband Liam Hemsworth? The Music video is filmed in the hotel where she caught him sleeping with another woman.

Everybody thinks that's what it is (heck, the song even mentions 'their home burning down' just like hers-&-Liam's did in the California wildfires); but a) she hasn't confirmed it & b) she is so much more than just 'her past relationships.'

It is about Liam since she filmed it in the exact hotel where he cheated on her.

Maybe Liam (and his alleged side-piece) INSPIRED it, but ... she 'generalized it' enough to work for ALL formerly-'romance dependent' girlfriends.

I'm not seeing it as "against their exes" so much as 'against their addiction to love.'

Sorry, I can't get myself to listen to this song or the majority of contemporary pop songs, in general.
It sounds like you aren't into this either, so I admire you for your patience. :P

I'd definitely listen to this one.

I bought myself flowers once, to celebrate something special that had happened/was happening for me. Every time I saw them in the vase for the next few days I was reminded of the reason for them and felt a little spark of joy. So, no, not meaningless for me, at least not on that occasion.

Can't say I care either way about Miley's song, but break up songs are a fine tradition. Personally I like You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette. Tessa Violet and Dodi's duet 'Burn' is also fun.

I think a more-effective break-up song is "Before He Cheats" (which I thought was called "The Next Time He Cheats" because of the 'final line' of the song: "The Next Time that He Cheats, oh, it won't be on me.")

Another 'more-effective' break up song is "The Thunder Rolls," by Gareth "Garth Brooks"
