The Rare occasions when the non lead of a band take lead vocals instead of the lead singer.

Postby Netherrealmer » 13 Nov 2024, 07:46

Usually bands only lets the lead singers sing while the other members are either musicians or back up singers. Sometimes though there are rare occasions where the non leads are allowed to sing.

Here are examples:

The lead singer of the Band Roxette is Marie Frederickson. The Guittarist Per Gessle is lucky to get back vocals but in the Song Vulnerable, its perspective of a man in love to a woman, So Marie steps down and Let Per Gessle sing vocals.

Freddie Mercury is the vocalist of queen because he have the best vocals of that band but there are rare occasions where other members sing.

Roger Taylor is the drummer of Queen and he takes vocals on this song.

Brian May is the song writer and composer of Queen but he lets Freddie lead because he is a better singer but Brian May is a good singer on his own right.

The lead singers of ABBA are Agnetta and Frida, the girls are just better singers but They have a song where the girls are back up singers and the lead singer is Bjorn.

The girls stepdown for this song because it's a guys perspective.A guy who rejects the underage girl flirting with him.

Chester Bennington is the lead singer of Linkin Park, Mike Shinoda is the Rapper but on this song, Mike is not rapping. He is the lead singer. I think this is recorded after Chester died and before they find the new vocalist Emily.

Yellow Submarine- The lead singer of The Beatles is a cross between Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Ringo Starr the drummer was the lead singer on this one.

Interesting topic, thanks Netherrealmer, I do like the Yellow Submarine song and Ringo Starr did a great job singing it.

It's always interesting when a non-lead band member steps up to the mic! There have been some memorable moments, like when Keith Richards took the lead on "Happy" by The Rolling Stones.
These instances often bring a fresh perspective and showcase the diverse talents within the band.

Me too! It does not happen often. But usually, if the non-lead singer takes the lead, it's fine by me. I figure most of the people in the group probably can sing too. It's just that they play instruments.

It's kind of like the actors who are also artists. Most people don't know thee celebrities paint or sculpt or whatever. The late Michael Jackson's artwork is pretty amazing.

What makes a good band is the ability of the backup singers to once in a while step up and take the lead. That shows that the band is built to be versatile.

Agree. That's why some bands and groups fall apart when the lead singer goes SOLO. They were riding on the wings of the lead vocalist.

I belong to a band now. And my director makes it a point of duty that anyone that has the desire to lead would have some chance. We have the regular pro lead vocalists. But if you desire to lead, a platform would be created for you to try and see how you grow from there.

The Destiny's child song Bad Habit is the only Song where Beyonce is not the lead. Its like a Solo Kelly song...

It has no music video though.

When a band member who is not the usual lead singer takes on lead vocals, it can bring a fresh and unique dynamic to the group's sound. This is sometimes done to showcase the diverse talents within the band or to give the main lead singer a break. It can also add variety to their live performances and recordings.

It is actually boring when a band has just one lead singer. It would just be so stereotypical when they perform.

Sometimes, it can even happen spontaneously. The music gets so engrossed into the backup and they don't even know when they are taking the lead in the song. But it is a beautiful thing.

Most bands don't have that dedicated lead singer anymore. Everyone is primed to lead and it is rotated.

Yeah. It is admirable when backup singers in a band show that they are well-versed with an entire performance.
A wakeup call for managers and producers to embrace inclusivity.

Everyone on the crew is actually supposed to know the whole song just in case anything happens.

A music band that does not embrace the current technology is doing itself a huge disservice. At the minimum, bands should adopt 5he practice of streaming their performances online.

I have seen a lead singer miss his key on stage and the backup takes over immediately as the lead singer could not enter. That's why a band is a team.

One of the famous female artists in my country was backup singer for Mary J Blige for close to a decade. Broke out and became a super lead.

Julie Ragins was a backup for years with the Moody Blues. And she did the entire lead role for a concert once and that's when people started appreciating what a good lead singer she was.

A backup singer should always come prepared. That particular day might just be the day she might just need to step up and show what she is made of.
