How do you feel about character Genderswaps in adaptations

Postby Netherrealmer » 16 Mar 2025, 19:36

In Marvel Comics, Taskmaster is a man, His powers is to copy your abilities in seconds. He is also very comedic. he also have abilities of Captain America, Hawkeye,Black Widow and a Sword fighting superhero.
Image

In Blackwidow movie and Thunderbolts movie, Taskmaster is turned into a woman but also turned into a serious character because Taskmaster is too similar to Deadpool. Taskmaster still looks like a man inside costume but when Black Widow removed the mask, her enemy is revealed to be a woman.

Robocop's sidekick is a police officer woman named Anne Lewis.
Image

The director want diversity on the remake so She is turned into a Black man named Jack Lewis.

In the Novel Wicked there is a female character named Pfanee, she is a friend of Glinda at school and 1 of Elphaba's bullies.

The movie version turned the character into a man. I guess because a gay bullying a woman is more fresh than a Meangirl bullying a woman. Also the actor is a good comedian.

In the horror videogame Silent Hill the main protagonist Harry Mason, Is a single dad who wants to rescue his daughter from a satanic cult that wants to sacrifice her.
Image

When its adapted into a Movie, the director refuses to make a movie where male protagonist is not a badass alphamale. He Thinks a loving father who is very caring and loving for his daughter is lame. He thinks dad should alphamales. He Thinks Harry is too motherly and nervous.

The director thinks being loving and caring is more of a mom thing, so he genderswapped Harry into a woman named Sharon.

On Starship Troopers, The 3 main characters, Johnny Rico, Carmen Ibanez and Dizzy Florez are Filipino. They are turned into White Argentines, In the movie. Dizzy is a Filipino man in the book.

In the movie, they turned this Playboy into a girl because they want an excuse for a topless shower scene with a woman and they want more female fighters.

I honestly don't know why they make these changes, is it to please a particular set of audience or what?

Maybe when people start boycotting most of these movies, these directors will learn to stop?

the Silent Hill gender swap is a bad because fathers can be loving and motherly too. It was a chance to show a father in positive light, A father willing to fight horrible monsters, demons and cult to save his daughter. Its like the director saying only mothers can be loving

It depends. Sometimes it's better, sometimes worse, sometimes it doesn't make any difference. In Joss Whedon's adaptation of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, a couple of the characters who are traditionally played by a man are played by a woman. All their lines are exactly the same and it still works.

Another good one is Army of the Dead. When one of the actors was cut from the film due to sexual misconduct they digitally replaced him with Tig Notaro. She says all the same lines and the other actors respond to her in exactly the same ways as to the male version of the character and it works.

It is very easy change gender of masked hero or villan. That is main reason why they do it. You can't easy change Hulk gender so you must make new character. I bet soon we will see new Iron Man but as female behind it.

Genderswap? It's entertainment. Entertainment is very subjective. If you don't want to watch something, then don't watch it!

If the people releasing the content don't cater to the viewer, they lose out.

They killed off Ironman and replace him with Riri. She is more of a replacement than a genderswap.

If the original character is male or female i don't have an issue with this, just give it to me that way.

Some Gender swaps do work well.

In the Novel, The Ring, The main character Kazuyiki Asakawa who investigated the case of Sadako's cursed tape with his bestfriend Ryuki.

in the movie, Kazuyiki Asakawa is gender swapped into Reiko Asakawa and Ryuki is turned into her EX-husband.

The American remake kept the concept of the ex-spouses

There were some rumors like they will return Iron Man and maybe Steve Rogers. Reason: on Marvel conference audience still wear Iron Man and Captain America (Steve Rogers) suits. They are more present than new characters and actors.
Since everything is now related to Quantom Reality where almost everything is possible they can get those two back.

And some genderswaps SUCK!
Queen Latifah in The Equalizer.
Lucy Liu as Watson for Sherlock Holmes.

They better not make a female James Bond OR Hercule Poirot.
Joan Bond AND Helene Poroit?

Lol. Genderswaps can get wierd and hard to relate with sometimes. You may still be boggled at the end of an episode, if you can't digest the swap. Some swaps may work out but the problem comes when it becomes a trend.

Have you seen Elementary? I loved it. I thought she was brilliant as Watson. But as you said yourself earlier "Entertainment is very subjective. If you don't want to watch something don't watch it!"

Everywhere there is talk going about inclusion and diversity. Maybe these changes are made to tick mark the box of being politically correct. I personally feel that these are not needed and are just tokenism.

Meryl Streep will be playing Aslan in the reboot of Narnia... She can voice him if she likes but keep him male because lets be Honest. Lions are more visually appealing than Lionesses.
