Telephone industry vs VoIP - history

Postby mrki444 » 14 Oct 2022, 20:35

Today, telecommunications companies offer us both telephone and Internet services. Many people don't even remember when the companies were separated. But the Internet remembers everything, so I came across an old article in which telephone companies protest and complain about VoIP applications.
In particular, the development of the Internet led to the development of VoIP applications with the full name Voice over Internet Protocol. Today's applications such as Viber, WhatsApp or the originator of Skype are increasingly replacing telephone lines.
This is exactly what the telephone companies were afraid of, so they filed a complaint with the competent agency and tried to ban VoIP applications in the beginning.

Read the article for more details.

There is another crack a lot of people do not know about. I have a small box that hooks up to my Internet Router and a regular Panasonic phone network that I paid about $100 for with 4 handsets that I can call any phone number in the US or Canada with no additional cost. My service is costing me $180 every 2 years ($3.75 a month) since 2015 with no problems. I have no worries about reception failures or batteries going dead and it has more call features than I even use.

Why you still have such system when you can call using Viber or WhatsApp? Does many of your friends still use landlines?

I find it interesting when existing businesses or organisations oppose progress. Obviously they want to protect their own business interests and that is understandable. However, in reality, there is no stopping progress. The best strategy is probably to embrace it, accept it as a reality and plan for how you can best succeed in the new environment.

Even VoIP is taking market every day even more, I don't think analog lines will extinct so fast. Many emergency services still use it. It is easier and cheaper for maintaince.
