First parking ticket in space

Postby mrki444 » 06 Oct 2023, 15:46

Yes you can get parking ticket in space to. It is little more expensive than on Earth, 150 000 $.

TV company DISH didn't 'park' it satelite in right orbit around Earth and FCC (The Federal Communications Commission) send ticket.
It is actually word about old, not functional satellite but until it fall on Earth it must be on correct orbit because of chance of collision with other satelites.

That's interesting, it does seem like space debris is becoming a big problem and it is good that some control is being taken over what is happening up there. Would you please have a link to the story @mrki444?

Yes space trash become mayor problem. There are over 200 000 parts between between 1 - 10 cm. Sending multiple used rockets shoud solve part of that problem.

This is actually old topic. Form cold war when many satelites are launch in orbit (military and civil), and when international companys start send their equpiment for broadcast signal, orbit start fill with trash. Trash can be dangerous since it can broke hole in space ship or even crash functional satelite.

The problem of space debris is a very tricky one. If I recall correctly, China once tested a Missile that can hit such debris in the space to clear them(although it could have been some dual use technology as well).
I think we could have more such "Parking Fines" in the future !

I got one link related to this post :

Here is video which show space debris amount in space in period from 1957-2015. I guess we have it now even more. Maybe less because of less space launch. Biggest number of space launch was during cold war.

If you want learn more about trash in space, here is excellent documentary movie from 2023. It is France movie but still it shows how trash will jeopardize all space research including communications.
