How about this to make it easy. Copy and paste the last answer, and then do your math in the next line. Then all you have to do is to edit / subtract 1 in that last line and you have it.

999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,000
Minus ONE
999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,998,999
Minus ONE = ?

For Example:

999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,998,999
Minus ONE = ?
999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,999,998,998
Minus ONE = ?
