Do people spend more when they use credit cards than when they use cash?

Postby kat82 » 22 Sep 2025, 02:57

Cards make it easy to swipe without feeling the pain of parting with money. Do you think this increases overspending?

Yes, I definitely think it does. I use the Google wallet facility on my phone to pay for a lot of stuff by credit card. It is just too easier, much easier than taking out my wallet and paying cash. When I pay with my phone, it doesn't even feel like spending money.

Yet in real sense it is spending. You can even end up spending what you wouldn't have spent using cash simply because it is simple.

It’s true that using a card removes the feeling of having to spend money directly, which can encourage overspending. When you don’t see money coming in, you spend without thinking.

The best way is to set spending limits and track everything you spend. Technology can help, but self-discipline is even more important.
