Mind Upload

Postby Netherrealmer » 15 Mar 2026, 16:19

mind upload is a technology scientists are working for, so the rich and elite, you know, can live forever on a new virtual body, like they will die, but they will continue living in an internet cloud. But, you know, human brain is complicated at this moment. Years ago, they tried to upload the brain of a worm, and now that worm is an immortal living in a virtual world. And now they decided to do the technology to apply, and now this fly, fruit fly, is forever living in a digital virtual world. The virtual fly looks animated, but it's not animated. It's the virtual fly living in the animated world. I don't know if the fly can see, if it feels hunger, but now it's an immortal.Eventually, they will try this technology with mammals, and finally, they will try to use it with humans. So if mind upload becomes normal in the future someday, as a virtual being, you can attend your own funeral, and you will be a virtual being that can be digitally visited by your family and friends, and you'll be on internet all day long.

Here's the problem with mind upload or consciousness upload, though. The fruit fly brain is 100 terabytes. And that's just a freaking insect, so the consciousness of a human will be needing a bigger storage than that.

Wasn't there an Amazon show about this? Or a Black Mirror episode?

Anyway, it won't happen in our lifetime given the speed of its progression. If it does happen in the future, it sounds like it'll only be for rich people since it takes so much memory storage. Everyday people won't be able to afford "renting" this.

Amazon have upload, while Netflix have the Black Mirror episode titled San Junipero. Those are the only things I know that are portrayals of consciousness upload. But yeah, it might take forever before they manage to make it with humans because, you know, who would have thought that a fruit fly is 100 terabytes? A very small insect, and its memories, its consciousness is 100 terabytes. And, you know, our storage right now is not even that big. I mean, no one can even afford a single terabyte cell phone. Well, it is available now, but a terabyte phone is something that average Joe cannot afford.

I believe there have been several movies about this before. Sounds cool though.

I wonder what does fruit fly felt being uploaded on that virtual world. I mean, he or she is alone, and they live in an empty world.

It would be awkward for them though, but what if the mind gets corrupted or something during the upload? Same way a file could get corrupted during transfer?

It will not really get corrupted because they will map the brain and they will check the parameters before uploading the consciousness. Basically, after they kill the fly, they map the brain of the fruit fly, and that mapped brain is used to upload its consciousness to become a CGI animated being. They started with worms, then with flies, and soon they will try it with pigs. And their endgame is to do it with humans, but it will be complicated and it will be very expensive because, you know, if a single fly is 1000 terabytes, how many terabytes is a human?

That's pretty impressive though, but i still won't 100% trust this process cause as humans we can make mistakes sometimes.

You know what? I won't mind becoming an upload because I want to stay alive for a long time. You know, it will be fascinating to talk to my great-great-great-grandchildren. Also, if you become digital, you will not eat, you will not die, you can choose your avatar so you can look good forever.I can eat all the food that I want and I will never get fat. Also, maybe sleep can be optional, you know? I can work for 24 hours And I won't get tired because my stamina will be different from a human.

This feeling and experience would definitely be a dream come true, but at the end of the day, what if you miss things such as human touch, or the ability to move wherever you want to with ease?

it seemed like the fly and the worm, they uploaded consciousness with, still have sense of touch and sense of taste. So, if you are not the only human who got uploaded, you can still, you know, have a person. There's gonna be a community of uploads. But the problem is, at this moment, probably if they will make an upload, that's gonna be a single person. Because, you know, if a single insect is 1,000 terabytes, how many terabytes is a human brain?

You would still work? If I got to live forever, I would not work another second . I would only do the things I like.

I will still rip because what if my existence have a rental fee or something? Because there's no way they will let me live free forever. That's what I was thinking.

I'm curious. I'm assuming there's a cost to having your mind uploaded after death, like what Elon Musk wants to do. What if you have your mind uploaded, but the living person who now has access to your bank accounts stops paying? They pull the plug. Is that murder?
