European countries are abandoning Microsoft

Postby mrki444 » 24 May 2026, 19:49

France wants to have a detailed insight into the needs of its entire administration so that it can switch from Microsoft (and other American) to open-source or at least European solutions. The city government of Lyon is already gradually introducing LibreOffice, and the French National Gendarmerie has successfully migrated tens of thousands of computers to Linux and OpenOffice.

The Danish Ministry of Digitalization announced that it will switch from Microsoft's Office 365 suite to LibreOffice by 2025, and some employees will also switch from Windows to Linux.

The Austrian army has already given up on Microsoft Office and is using open source office tools and services that use data storage in Europe.

The reason for this is the dependence on American technology giants, and the fickleness of the American government has also been added. It was concluded that there is a potentially extremely high threat to both European economies and the functioning of state and local institutions themselves.

What is the situation in your countries or workplaces?

Wow! A lot is really going on out there. But most places still use Windows and Microsoft Office widely in offices and schools, though some governments and schools test Linux to cut costs and avoid vendor lock in.

We use it also in Croatia since we have contracts with them and they are official support. We can use other tools but it is on teachers responsability and in case of data breach, it is teacher fault.

It's going to be hard for them to completely replace Microsoft though, but let's watch and see how it goes.

How dangerous dependence on American companies is was clearly demonstrated by the case of the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), who was denied access to his official email by Microsoft after the ICC panel of judges issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant. They did this without an official court order.

Munchen again try leave MS products. This is third attempt. Maybe this time it will be successful. They must convice workers and users and give them more time to adopt. Also IT support will have a lot of work.
