RAM = Random Access Memory

Postby Allius » 03 Jul 2016, 19:59

RAM is important component in our computers :)
I have 2 computers: a laptop and a desktop. Recently I upgrade my computers and now I have 8GB of RAM in each one. Unfortunately my motherboards don't allow me to buy more... :(

And you? How much RAM do you have in your computer?

I just bought a refurbished laptop. It has an Intel processor and 8 GB of RAM. I love it and I'm impressed that you were able to upgrade your existing computers.

Hello @sherryinutah
I love computers and hardware :) And believe me. Change RAM in our computers is a very easy task... We only need to know how much RAM our motherboard can use and what kind of RAM do we have to buy!

I only have 5 GB in my laptop and 2 GB in the desktop... I am thinking of getting a new laptop with higher specs now.

I don't think they made many machines with 5 GB of RAM. :O I generally see four, six, or eight.

Yup mine had 2GB in two slots, I wanted an increase so I had replaced one with 4GB so now I have 5 in total.

You can use READY BOOST to allow a flash drive, USB Stick or SD Card to act as virtual RAM. Since I only have 4Gb RAM, I had problems with Windows 10 giving me Low Memory Errors and installed a 32Gb SD Card with Ready Boost and it works fine now.

Really is that a thing now? I never knew. Virtual RAM? WOW!
How much does it cost? Does it work well with desktops too?

My 6-year old laptop has a 1 GB RAM.
I'm thus planning to upgrade it.

@MeowsePad my desktop came originally with 5GB of RAM. I also agree that is more logical 4, 6 or 8GB but sometimes they don't do that... :P ;)

The situation I described was a desktop. The only cost is the SD Card and I think it was about $15. You may also need a USB adapter if your computer lacks the proper slot to use one, or you could usa a USB stick .

When I brought my laptop, it had 8gb but I upgraded it to 16gb as I did occasionally get low memory warnings when I had a couple of browsers open, playing games through steam and other software open etc.

I wonder if they were undecided if they should build it with 4gb or 6gb and some clueless guy in a suit being paid $100,000 a year just decided to go in the middle with 5gb

@CyberFreak I can imagine the scene! The suit man are analysing the reports and decide:
With 4GB = too cheap
With 6GB = too expensive
Why don't we sell the computer with 5GB???
And then he think: I'm a genious!!  :P

Hahaha. :) Yeah. I had 8 GB of memory originally, but then 4GB of it stopped working. With only 4 GB, I noticed a lot of frame rate drops in games that use a lot of memory. That's when I upgraded to 16 GB. There are few situations that require more than 8-16 GB of memory.

Something to think about, to add another 8gb DDR3 memory can cost $40 to $60 and a 32Gb SD card (or USB stick) is only about $15.

It sounds like you have more significant problems than memory, because 8Gb should be plenty to run Wiki pages fast. Have you done a disk cleanup lately?

Honestly, I don't think this is an easy task.
How do I know how much RAM my motherboard can use?
How about knowing what kind of RAM do we have to buy!?
