Permissions for apps

Postby sprite1950 » 02 Oct 2016, 08:56

One thing that really puts me off installing an app is the permissions. I was thinking of installing Rabadaba until I saw all the permissions they need. Managing and making calls, taking pictures and recording audio, etc. Why do they need all this and is it safe?

Hope this is in the right section :?

I am a member of Rabadaba and I only upload pictures and make favourites, upvotes and sometimes redabs. You don't have the need to do all those things, those are options to earn there. Rabadaba is a great App, the community is very friendly and you can earn even when you are sleeping. @Sprite1950, if you decide download the App, I am @nela there, I would love to help.

I am not sure why they say all that when they are asking permission. I know that they probably have to state that because of some laws or something so that they don't get sued. I use Rabadaba and really like it. I haven't had any issues and they only thing they really need permission for is your camera so you can upload or take pictures through the app. Hope you decide to join. I am under the same name as here: morgoodie

I too am not sure but I guess it could be related to the functionality of the app. As the app has an option of uploading audio/video/pics both live and stored may be that is the reason that they need the permission. However, managing and making calls baffles me

Most of the times, apps use our prsonal information like: Identifying user via contacts list (to see if the account is a duplicate or not).

Other apps use it to selll and earn $.

I think I might give it a go as the app reviews are good and plenty of people use it. It's a little worrying to think they could sell our info though :( Thank you everybody for your help as I have installed it but been a little worried about accepting the permissions.

I think it depends on the app. Some apps are safe and some just are not safe at all. I have seen some apps requiring location information may not be safe at all. But you can figure that out based on the intent of the app.

This is very true, and which is why some sites only allow you to log on via an app, or they want to use it to verify who you are and where you are. It's quite sneaky really and so I don't use apps if I can help it.

Yes, sometimes those statements really stop me from installing the apps, unless it's from a trusted vendor. It seems like we just have to accept it if we want to use the app.

I want to try out Rabadaba too, but couldn't find it yet.

I found it in the google playstore and it's very easy to install. The reviews are quite good too which made me decide to give it a go.

I harp on this all the time. Most apps are way too invasive for my taste. I wish more people would read that stuff before just accepting it. We are literally handing out our most personal info everyday without questioning what they will do with it.

Just because of this very condition I never download any apps especially which are not necessary for me. I am not sure if they have reach to my private information or even misuse it.

Yeah, some apps are really intrusive with their permissions and it can be one of the reasons I won't download an app. You have to be really careful.

I don't think that most people are very careful. I know several who were shocked to learn what they had agreed to. Read the fine print!

I also hate websites that try to force you to sign up via social media. Maybe I don't want you to have all my personal info and that of my family and friends. I really need a generic account.

I have noticed more sites make it easier to sign in via social media such as Grabpoints and there were a couple of forums on Postloop that made it a requirement. Never trust them when they say they will only access certain details, because they can change that later on without telling you. I went through a list of all mine and deleted many of them.

You aren't supposed to have more than one Facebook account, but many people do and I have had to for lots of reasons. As long as it's not used to pretend to be someone else I think it's okay. Mine is my pen name, which I write under so I have a writer page that tallies with it.

It depends on the functionality of the app. Some apps like Ola, it will check for our location, so in order to find our location it enables the GPS to find it. And some apps may access our contact list like some social networking apps. It depends from App to App based on the intended functionality of it.

I agree, the utility apps are different from earning apps which I never download when they ask for permission and change what they feel or even share on my behalf. A sure no-no for me.

Most apps seem to ask for certain permissions for a reason, but it always helps to be cautious - how do you know they aren't using it for other reasons as well? I tend to not pay attention to permissions but it certainly gets you thinking.
