Netflix is now begging their subscribers to not watch videos in HD

Postby Netherrealmer » 20 Mar 2020, 11:49

Because of the coronaVirus, Majority of people are binging netflix at home but caused problems to their servers because every one are watching in 1080p60 HD which slows down their servers, They are currently begging their subscribers to watch in SD so people with slower internet can watch. Netflix is not able to handle so many customers using at the same time that it messes their servers.. I know there are people out there who refuses to watch videos not in HD.

I think they are not ready for a scenario where the world stays at home and watches at the same time.

Really? Surely nobody expected this day would come. I don't have a Netflix subscription, so I am missing out on this. For the time being, they might consider lowering their video quality for all and state the reason for this. They can make it their default and whosoever tries to switch to higher quality should be shown the message.

Yes, I've even heard there are fears that with people being asked to work from home, the infrastructure could be overwhelmed and slowed right down! Everything is grinding to a halt. I've just been on MyLot and it seemed very quiet.

I don't think they will redesign their site and system for something temporary that's why they resorted to begging members to use lower quality.

Cannot Netflix itself start transmitting in SD? At least for two weeks?
Perhaps that could help them?

They might be too lazy to do some coding, so their choice is to beg people to use sd.

Yeah, with most people staying at home now, they are looking for some things to do and it seems watching Netflix is an easy pick.

But why don't Netflix temporarily freeze the HD contents?

They probably need to be careful because of contracts. In them they are obligate to provide HD service.

They can beg all they want. But if they want us to watch in lower than HD.
they also need to lower their prices I think. I was thinking of getting netflix again.
This corona thing is so stupid.

I just realized Pirate Bay will be helpful for them since less people will be watching in HD. They will just download a pirate copy in hd instead.

The Americans planning on going on Pirate Bay had better hope the FBI is working at home, too.

Netflix is forcibly reducing streaming quality in the UK and Europe - https://variety.com/2020/digital/news/n ... 203541678/

According to Florance, “the action we’ve taken maintains the full range of video resolutions. So whether you paid for Ultra-High Definition (UHD), High Definition (HD), or Standard Definition (SD), that is what you should continue to get (depending on the device you are using).” To chop bandwidth utilization, Netflix for the next 30 days has “removed the highest-bandwidth streams,” i.e., those with the best quality, he said.

“If you are particularly tuned into video quality you may notice a very slight decrease in quality within each resolution,” Florance wrote. “But you will still get the video quality you paid for.”

Basically we pay the same but get a lower quality stream compared to normal but it is fine because if we pay less, we get downgraded to a plan with streaming lower than what it used to be anyway

BT, one of the biggest ISP's in the UK has said that the current peak is still way lower than the record they have handled (without issue) anyway so this seems a it needless - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-51974866

Here's the strange thing. I used to watch Netflix a lot. But lately I started finding old black and white movies on YouTube. Talk about poor quality picture. It's awful! But not bad considering how old the movie is. I'm enjoying them. There is a certain feeling you get when you watch old films. They don't have these movies in the Netflix database. So I am watching video NOT in HD by choice! :D

That is good I do love a lot of the old black and white horror movies.
Like the ones about vampires and classic horror. Now those are some great films.

So they finally lowered the picture quality for the sake of their servers getting stable. Many videos are now forced to play in SD.
