How often do you format your PC or laptop?

Postby peachpurple » 29 Sep 2015, 07:28

I don't format that often, maybe once a year for my laptop.

Only when the laptop hangs or lag too long to load up the pages.

Gee, this made me realize that I haven't formatted the hard disk of my computer since I bought it in September 2009. The 500 GB seagate disk has not given me a problem. The archive disk that I bought is also a Seagate, a good brand I'd say.

I have this laptop for the last 2 years and a half and I only had to reset it to factory settings after upgrading the SO to the marvellous Win 10, don't know where my mind was when I did that :/.

An hanging laptop or a slow internet connection are not reasons for you to format your machine, most of the times this problems are related with Spyware or even with a poor internet connection. Further more formatting your PC often is not healthy for the hard disk and sooner or later you end up damaging it. To avoid in my humble opinion that an user should format a PC only if the SO is corrupt and the system does not start, and even though there are ways of solving that issue without formatting.

If you want to keep your PC healthy make sure you have an anti virus, a malware scanner like MalwareBytes and some program that offers tools to clean your PC like CCleaner. You can get all these programs free without taking any risks.

I used to do it every couple of years as a regular cleanup of my system (I install and remove lots of stuff I like to try).
Now I guess the period is about the same, but to install new OS version :)

i just format it when i need to, but eventually windows just gets slower and slower due to all that crapware that infects our computer without us even wanting these things, those sh**ty searchbars which you have to be clever to not install them, but even if you are careful you can end with crapware '-'

last week my win7 installation went nuts, just showing "Windows 7 Home Premium" in a black background and not showing the users to select... never saw windows 7 doing this ever (and i user to format lots of computers/laptops at work). but it's easy to see thats a problem that could be fixed with a new installation... so i went and installed win10 to try it... and actually is not as bad as i tought it was!

My laptop is 6 years old and I have formatted my laptop only once. I had to format my laptop because hard disk was corrupted. I use a paid antivirus which I update regularly and run security check once in a while and I never encounter any problem.

I have not formatted my laptop until now. It's been 4 years. I just keep it safe and clean by not downloading unnecessary stuff and using Ccleaner regularly.
However, now I feel that I need to format it once. Usually it is advisable to format our PC/laptop at least once a year after heavy usage.

I wouldn't just format it to improve performance, only if there was something wrong with the system which happens very rarely.

I do not have any fixed period for formating my pc. Whenever i suspect there is a virus or malware in my pc, then i will format. Sometimes same sentence will be repeated several times . Pc takes more than 20 minutes to open and hangs frequently . During such occassions i will format my pc

I am reinstalling my Windows twice in two months. It is good because when your PC is getting slow, you should reinstall it. Viruses are the number two why I am reinstalling my Windows.

I do not like to format my device very often as this gives rise to some newer issues each time. But, the amount of downloads sometimes make the device slower. So, I need to do a formatting all over again to set the correct pace of my laptop.

I just formatted my PC a few days ago so that I could do a clean installation of Windows 10. Upgrading my Windows 7 to Windows 10 had created some really strange quirks, and they're all solved now that I've done a clean installation. My computer seems to run a lot better now.

Since I quit using Windows to surf the Internet, I don't need to format anymore. I use PCLinuxOS and it is what they call a rolling distribution. Every few days a little orange ball shows up in my task bar to tell me when it needs an update. I run the update in a few minutes and then use BleachBit to clean out any unnecessary files and reboot. Now it runs lightning fast fresh as a daisy.

Well I just got a new PC and have windows 8 on it so I won't be reformatting it for a while. And my laptop has no disc drive, I am not sure how to format without a disc drive.

You have to have a disk drive to store the system and programs you use, but yours is probably a solid state disk drive. It's the data it holds that gets corrupted, regardless of what kind of disk stores it. The steps to reformat it are the same as it would be if you had a traditional spinning platter hard drive.
