I heard about that when I was still in college, as I was wondering why we were studying Cobol. Yes, I'd be surprised they are still using it now, as I have left college for about 20 years.

Have you heard of Ada? That's actually the first programming language I learned, and my friend told me he read about this language in history of programming which is not commonly used.

OMG, really?!?! I never knew it's been that long since you left University. I think I heard about Ada but never used it. How about Natural? Some of my colleagues (same company I learned Cobol) used to work on that programming language

Wow!
You must be a wizard.
Kudos
By the way, what prerequisites were needed for you to pursue software engineering?

Yup, self-taught web developer that's making money here and there from freelancing, when I'm going to finish college I'm probably going to earn a lot more at a stable job.

Sounds great FuZyOn, do you have your own website where you promote your services?

germainebull wrote:what prerequisites were needed for you to pursue software engineering?

That would depend on what course you want to do, there are many courses which will accept beginners with no prior experience. If you would like to do a course in this area, please feel free to start a new topic with your requirements and our members will give you suggestions on how to get started.

How disappointing.
Isn't Cobol an archaic language?

Probably it is. But I won't count that as disappointing - to be honest. Knowing the language allowed me to relocate and seek opportunities abroad: Singapore, Australia, and Ireland. And if that's "disappointing", I don't know what's "disastrous" for you.

Often knowing older technology can be a distinct advantage, since most of your competition can't go there without retraining.

Working on a New Side-Hustle

Since age is no longer creeping up on me, but rushing in like an NFL ball carrier on 4th down from the 1 yard line. it's very simple.

Oops.... I accidentally revealed my old age.
I am 37. If I am not mistaken, I took Cobol in my first year. I do not know about Natural, I just remember we learned assembly language as well. But obviously, I have forgotten them all. My first programming job required us to use VB, then later we switched to Visual C++, then C#.
I did learn Java in college too, but I have not explore further since I did not work on that. I usually just follow the Microsoft path, as it's what my previous companies did and I did explore much yet, though I'd like to learn PHP as well.

Yes, I think that too. I always think it's good to have learned something, whether it's popular or not. ;)

HAHA, I think it's because of your icon, I sort of had an impression you were a lot younger than me  Our age is not that far off (turning 32 this year). Actually, I also realized that it has been a looooong time since I graduated from College after reading your comment
