Nope I have a fairly old Satellite L775-S7105

Specs are more important than brand name though so just because I had a bad experience with Toshiba doesn't mean your won't have a decent or even good experience with them. Because of big names laptops being mass manufactured there are bound to be some lemons in the group.

As far as specs, I personally would go with an i7 because I game, I edit videos and images, and I code, but since it seems like you will only be using it for basic tasks I would suggest you go with an i3 or and i5 processor.

Start with 4GB of RAM, there isn't much of a chance that you would have to upgrade the RAW because you are using it the way you are.

Hard drive space wouldn't be a big factor for you probably so 250 - 500GD HDD should be enough

You already said you were thinking about a 14" so search in the range, the smaller the screen usually means the lower the price but also the lower ther resolution which I assume your don't really care about.

How many years are we talking about? How often do they use the laptops? How heavy is this use?

They are heavy users, both for work and personal, and we are talking about more than 10 years. And they use their laptop daily, as I don't know one person that don't use laptop daily. Their mobile are iPhone 4 and still in use!

Yes I agree with that review although they don't mention HP which is one of the best brands in my opinion. Asus and Dell are excellent. Apple is also very good but they are too expensive that's why I never bought one. I would advise you to buy one of the brands mentioned above, I never had any problems with both of them. Please do not buy a Toshiba, their graphics card don't last long.

I hope you have found some models that you like. Before you know it, it'll be Black Friday where the prices should drop even further.

It's a good idea to see what deals there are as many places will do online pre-sales too.

Online deals upto December are going to be really good. The pricing right now is going to be low with all brands. So the best time to buy is now. And if you have any service issues buying local then get it from the online stores. that way you'd do just fine.
