This usually happens when the people manning the security cameras are compromised. In such cases, corrupt government agencies can hand over such crucial data to anyone with money or power.

Not entirely; you will find that people who are knowledgeable sometimes fall prey to rogue governments that abuse technology.

I concur with you earthsalt. No matter how much technological knowledge we have, we are bound to fall victims to devious people who may choose to misuse technology.

Some individuals feel nervous about the idea of someone watching them everytime they are out in public while others feel more secure with cameras. Security cameras in public violate privacy rights and surveillance systems are easily abuse and misused, even though I think that advantages of installing public surveilance cameras outweight the disadvantages greatly because security in public places should always be put on the top of priority, it reduce crime rate and help catch criminals.
If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about.

street cameras in our country are CCTV to catch those who beat the traffic lights and accidents.
But most of the time you don't find street cameras in rural areas

I should say that both of these are undesirable or even unethical activities. If street cameras can curtail these, I guess more cameras should be installed.

The idea that some unseen third party is watching my every move freaks me out.
This reminds me of some scenes in certain scifi novels.

Unfortunately, you usually find that technology is mostly abused, especially in countries with rogue/illegitimate/corrupt regimes. It is a real 'cancer'.

In all fairness, people will always find some way to tamper with processes, whether there's some sophisticated technology involved or otherwise. But on the whole, technology can make it harder in some instances. I think We really can't win, because some of these crooks are highly intelligent.

The main benefit of surveillance cameras in public spaces should be the increase of public safety. Public surveillance cameras help you stay safe while clubbing, shopping, and travelling, even though voyeurism is a form of abuse, when we are walking down the street, driving in our car, or hanging out with our husband or boyfriend, we will be monitored with cameras placed in public and this creates a complete picture of the private life of an individual.

CCTV cameras are getting to be in fashion in Metro Manila. The nightly news never fail to show arrests or identification of a criminal with the help of the CCTV in the streets. This is a big blow to criminals.

You are right; CCTV systems could deter/curtail criminal activity in some places. They could prevent small criminals why have no political connections from perpetrating criminality.
They could however also help big criminals holding high public office to perfect their criminality.

You have described a classical dilemma. To resolve it, we need to educate, sensitize and clamor for ethics and accountability in our public officials.

This would be a hugely tall order as most governments are led and staffed by scoundrels who would not bat an eyelid when it comes to stuffing their pockets with stolen loot. Corruption is like a calling to these government officials.
