I'm especially interested in this subject because the current capitalistic society does not place a lot of importance on the plight of workers. I just hope some viable remedy will be found to safeguard workers'rights

How I wish I were as optimistic as you. Experience has repeatedly taught me that human beings are increasingly becoming more or less like animals; humanity is disappearing at an alarming rate!

Specialists say that 7 millions jobs will be lost due automation in the next 5 years.
It was reported at the world economic forum in Davos last year.
Very disturbing...

Disturbing indeed. I just hope that the world will find a way to keep these soon-to-be-redundant workers alive.

Is it clear what these jobs are? Skilled? Semi-skilled? Unskilled?

I bet the jobs that are projected to be lost due to automation fall in all categories; skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled.

Those people who currently earn their daily bread by reading electricity meters are bound to be rendered jobless when the power company rolls out prepaid electricity schemes to the full in Kenya.

It is wrong to say like that. It is we human beings who create 'robots' in the name of automation and not the other way round.

Today, I watched a news report about a Chinese restaurant inside China that is using robots to serve customers. I am shuddering to think about the fate of the human waiters who used to work here.

Most of the so-called lobbyists have been compromised, unfortunately. They thus typically dance at the tune of capitalists eagerly, abandoning their core mandate of protecting public interests.

I hypothesize that the meter readers would vigorously fight the introduction of prepaid meters. In social circles, this phenomenon is know as 'resistance to change'.

Such resistance would be futile, in my estimation. As they say; nothing can stop an idea whose time has come.
I would advise the meter readers to shape up or ship out!

True. But take note that all sorts of change is usually difficult. Vested interests have to fight change always.
