i believe that we need upgrades because with every upgrade comes new technology and improvement in the user interface. and for mobile users if one does not want to upgrade from iphone 7 to 8 then they don't have to it is all about preference

People can survive without upgrades. Of course, technology is a necessity people have gone crazy without having their gadgets but I think people can survive without it. There were no gadgets before and yet people survived.

We certainly can but you know change is dynamic annd we humans get bored over time we need features that we keep us happy so we keep upgrading to enjoy our devices better.

Maybe we don't but society will makes us. For example: on how much places can you buy old mobile phones? Maybe few and they will be moved to. And then you will buy smartphone since you don't have choice.

@cmoneyspinner, and others, Moore's law is the best rule for why we need upgrades. As computing power increases, so will demand for higher computing products with more efficient algorithms and smaller size. That's why we have seen an evolution from heavy landline and satellite phones to an iPhone, and big heavy industrial computers to a laptop for example.

I personally think that I can survive without upgrades but I prefer to upgrade for the performance value. Also, if budget permits I will definitely upgrade my smartphone as it is a tool for me in my work as well.
