Re: Japan is now banning social network usernames

I seriously doubt this law will pass because they're so sensitive to their private information being online. Believe it or not, having to provide your real name is one of the reasons why very few Japanese people have Facebook accounts. If they're not comfortable with giving Facebook their name, I can't see why they would be comfortable giving other social media networks their name.

And also I can see this actually backfiring and doing more harm than good. If everyone is required to use their real names, then the bullies with a target can even harrass you online. The kids at school who are bullied will not even be able to use social media safely now.

Japan does many things where the idea and intention is good, but when executed, it goes poorly. This will definitely be one of those things, imo.

I can see the reasoning for it but it's also a kick in the proverbial nuts for those who want privacy. I got forced to use my real name on Facebook and I hate it as it is a privacy concern. You can easily find the address of somebody if you have their name.

Banning social network usernames, I don't think so it's effective against bullying. Let's just say, a person bullies another person, then how sure they are that the name on social network is also the same person who used the account. Any person can pretend others identity.

This a real news to me - never heard about Japan is considering to ban usernames. I wasn't aware either that cyber-bullying is so rampant in Japan. Even if you are subject to cyber-bullying, suicide is not the answer. Simply stay away from the social media or close down your account. That was what many celebrities did here in India, after they were trolled on social media after the suicide of a Bollywood actor.

And who can blame them in this day and age of identity fraud, among other things? It sounds like Japan is a bit like Botswana in respect of having fantastic ideas but poor implementation. I hope whatever decision the Japanese government takes will serve the nation well.

I don't the see the WHY on this one. When a person creates a social network account they can be required to give their real name which is kept from their public view and use a user name they created. What's the big deal?

Do they not have RAPPERS in Japan? RAPPERS don't use their real names. Do you know Snoop Dogg's real name?
Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr.. He' s junior. Quite frankly I don't know why he didn't call himself Cordozar. That sounds way cooler than Snoop Dogg.

Yeah, I don't see why they're doing this. It's not going to change anything.

There's actually very few rappers in Japan, lol. Most artistes use their real names or names with the same pronunciation but with different Kanji.

Possible. But the bullied can block that bully if he or she still wishes to use that social media. And using real names in social media might be a good thing because police could track down easily on people who are doing crimes such as human trafficking, scamming and spreading explicit videos.

Those who are bullied at school are not bullied by one person, but by a group of people. If they were to block the bully on social media, the bullying in real life might become worse.

Also people breaking the law will not use their real names because they're not stupid. This will do nothing to reduce crimes.

That is really sad that people go that extent because of cyber bullying, just in my case I dontbreally think that is the best method to reduce those suicides rate st hat they have confirmed are as a result of cyber bullying.I think they shouod increase awareness approaches and intensify the legal results of using hate speech or action. As for the username it is very easy to track a person if the have jurisdiction backing them to get identify of a particular username that was in a wrong
