I'd say its smart to evaluate oneself using your method.

Having no website or blog, I cannot say how I perform this self-evaluation.

It's easy, just type your name into a Google search box and read the responses. If you want more accurate responses not influenced by your previous searches, use a private window.

Working on a New Side-Hustle

Since age is no longer creeping up on me, but rushing in like an NFL ball carrier on 4th down from the 1 yard line. it's very simple.

I have done this search in the past but nothing recently. I should do a query to see what comes up.

I too was very annoyed to find I could bring up my email address, mobile and landline numbers and postal address! Since moving to Botswana though, my address doesn't come up, it's still the old UK showing which fortunately isn't my in-laws'!I hate that you also see snippets of things you've commented on across different sites!

Yes, WAY too much information is freely available online (and people can find out pretty much everything about you if they pay). I find it very unsettling. I just looked myself up again, and found another page filled with my personal info, including links to my husband's info. They link me to my maiden name and even mention my mother, who never even goes online. This is ridiculous.

Is it any wonder stalking is so much worse?

It looks to me like most of it was taken straight from Facebook. That's just BS. I knew I didn't like FB for a reason.

Actually, not "taken from FB" but sold or given away by FB more likely. Absolute crap.

I only noticed that my real.name could be found through certain sites where I have put it up. Truly now I feel that isn't necessary and may close my accounts with those sites. Otherwise, I think googling up screen-names arelot more fun.

You might see if you can change your real name to a screen name, if you don't actually want to close down your accounts. I tend to use a screen name or pen name everywhere these days. It might not really do that much good, but it makes me feel better.

I have done it many times. Actually I have done it to checkout if there are any images of mine coming in the search engine or not. So I used to check it at regular interval.

I did used to look up my name to see my work. Also, to see what people were saying about it (if anything). A lot of times though, I sold my articles, and the person who bought it posted it with their byline. I still looked up my article titles to see if they were well-received though.

I've just googled my name and my nickname used online and I wonder what I found there. I didn't find me on sites where I am a member, but I discovered I am a big trade company. LOL Or my name, because I'm surely not a company. :)

Lol @Simonex. I hope it sells good stuff :P My screen name brings up a forum and so I should be claiming them to pay me royalty

@thisnthat How do you manage the name used on sites where you are only known to people by your original name in case you don't want to delete that account?

I almost always use a screen name or pen name. If I signed up under my real name, I change it to a pen name and try to keep the same avatar, so it's recognizable. I also tell people that I'm changing *or have changed* my name.

Your posts have enlightened me on the possible reasons for which I may Google my name.
How about Googling a name to see if I'm listed on private sites that perform spy work?

You may not need to have a blog or a site to uqve your name show up on Google. By just having an account on Facebook or other social media sites is enough to feature your name on Google search

I never googled my name until I read an article on how people can use your photograph and information on certain undesirable websites. I now Google my name occasionally just to check that my online reputation is not suffering in any way :D

Thanks for posing this question.
It has helped me to review my privacy settings on my social media and other online accounts.
I've noticed several aspects that need modification :)

I did it once just for fun and was very surprised with the results. The first result I got was a famous mexican actress and almost all the links were about her, I got two links to my facebook and Google+ profile. My name is a bit rare so I was surprised to find an actress with the same name as me.

I had never googled my name until I read your question. There are 12,800,000 search results for my name. But I am not there. I don't want to be either. I like to be incognito. If I ever decide to do a blog, I shall choose a pseudonym.
